Pre-Apprentice Program Celebrates First Graduate; Apply Now for Next Cohort
As we head into the new year, we’re reflecting on the first year of the pre-apprentice program at India Basin Waterfront Park. While the full cohort is expected to graduate in January 2026, we are proud to recognize our first early graduate, Lawrence Tacto.
Throughout the program, Lawrence was consistently punctual, dedicated, and eager to deepen his skills both on and off the clock. With a background in horticulture, he emerged as a cohort leader, sharing his plant knowledge generously with peers. Although less experienced with power tools at the outset, he embraced every learning opportunity and quickly became a safe and proficient operator.
His work ethic, passion for landscape horticulture, and collaborative spirit made a meaningful impact on the cohort and ultimately led to his early acceptance into Rec and Park’s gardener apprentice program. We look forward to his continued professional growth and positive contributions to San Francisco's parks and communities!
Interested in getting involved? This program is a paid public service trainee opportunity for San Francisco residents who receive public benefits. The program, offered in partnership with the San Francisco Human Services Agency and LiUNA Local 261, helps prepare participants for careers in public service and park maintenance. For more information and to apply, visit the JobsNOW! page at the link below and note interest in the pre-apprentice program.

SF Parks Earn Top Grades for Cleanliness, Maintenance, Equity; India Basin Scores 99%
San Francisco’s parks earned top marks this year, with a new Controller’s Office report showing cleaner, better-maintained public spaces across the city. The citywide maintenance score ticked up to 92%, continuing a decade-long upward trend and reflecting strong performance systemwide. Nearly 90% of parks met or exceeded Rec and Park’s minimum goal score, while Corona Heights Park, Golden Gate and Steiner Mini Park, Joseph Lee Recreation Center, and Sergeant John Macaulay Park achieved perfect 100% ratings. India Basin Waterfront Park, which opened in October 2024, made an impressive debut with a 99% score.
The report highlights meaningful gains in equity and cleanliness, with parks in Equity Zones matching the citywide average and graffiti scores improving significantly. Mini parks saw notable progress as well, and seven of the city’s top-scoring parks are neighborhood sites. While 18 parks fell below the department’s 85% goal, six already have capital projects underway, while the others will be addressed with near-term fixes such as sand replenishment, pathway repairs, and surface improvements, along with longer-term capital investments and deferred maintenance prioritization. Night Work Completed at India Basin Shoreline Park; Saturday Work Ahead
Thank you for your patience as we completed night construction last month to complete essential work before the regulatory work window ended. Work included low-tide earthmoving along the shoreline and gravel delivery to extend a levee to the beach area to be able to construct park features.
Note that there will be construction on Saturdays over the next two months from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on December 13, as well as January 3, 10, 17 and 24. This Saturday work is needed to make the best use of available specialized equipment and staff.
In addition to this work, crews continue to clear electrical equipment in the former PG&E tower area, with that work expected to conclude in January 2026. Stay up to date at the link below.
