We don’t lose skills all at once—we lose them gradually, as dependency on AI subtly erodes our mental muscles. Self-awareness, a core tenet of mindfulness, helps leaders recognize when this erosion is happening. Self-aware leaders evaluate whether they are engaging with AI as a tool or relying on it as a crutch.

Accepting a contrasting view of one’s performance is challenging. When giving feedback to an individual lacking self-awareness, a manager must understand that an approach that preserves a sense of self, while still identifying the needed change, is more likely to generate change than simply and logically identifying shortcomings.
