Welcoming Interfaith and Spiritual Exploration (WISE) Pre-Orientation: Meet the WISE 2025 Peer Mentors
The Emory WISE Pre-Orientation program is a 5-day engaged interfaith learning experience designed to ease incoming students' transition to college while providing an opportunity to explore Atlanta, build skills in religious and philosophical literacy and interfaith leadership, and make new friends at Emory.
One of the highlights of WISE is always our learning journeys to 6-8 different spiritual and religious communities on and around campus, downtown in historic Atlanta, and beyond. This is a great way to get connected with the city of Atlanta as well as spiritual communities on the Emory campus.
Throughout the program, a group of returning students serve as peer mentors and assist with the recruitment of incoming student participants, facilitate reflection activities, co-lead program sessions, and help answer questions and inquiries from incoming student participants. Peer mentors come from diverse religious, non-religious, spiritual, and ethical backgrounds. Meet the Emory WISE Peer Mentor team here.
Emory WISE 2025 takes place August 18-22, 2025 and registration for incoming first year students starts on May 11. The program is free of charge thanks to generous donors. Register and learn more here.

Malcolm Wiley II
Hello! My name is Malcolm Wiley II, and I'm excited to be working with WISE this summer! I'm currently a graduate student at Emory's Candler School of Theology. I am drawn to interfaith work as a result of my studies, as well as growing up in diverse religious environments. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and getting to work with you over the course of this program!

Eryn Underwood
As a rising third-year Master of Divinity student at Candler School of Theology, I am interested in supporting students on their spiritual journeys and providing opportunities for them to explore sources of meaning and purpose in their lives. I have experience teaching, coaching, and mentoring in a variety of settings, and I am passionate about helping students grow into who they want to be. I am so excited to be a part of WISE because the program reflects two of my personal guiding principles: curiosity and reflection. I hope to use my curiosity to encourage reflection and courageous interfaith conversations among WISE participants. I feel so grateful to be part of this amazing team of people!

Celebrating Emory OSRL Chaplaincy Resident Jaeun Koo
We want to take a moment to recognize Jaeun Koo for her invaluable work in the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life. First as a chaplain intern and then as a chaplaincy resident, Jaeun has worked closely with Beloved Community and Christian Life since August 2023. In her role, she helped grow attendance at worship and Bible study, develop student leaders, and provide pastoral care to many students. Through her teaching, preaching, vision, humor, and presence, Jaeun has been a key member of Beloved Community. We will miss her greatly as she begins her next adventure, and we’re thrilled she’ll be close by during her PhD studies in the Graduate Division of Religion in the Laney Graduate School.
If you would like to share a note of thanks with Jaeun, please email Rev. Maddie at mhend25@emory.edu and she’ll ensure Jaeun receives the message.

Welcome Lillian Hibbard, Emory Beloved Community Contextual Education Intern 2025-2026
My name is Lillian Hibbard (she/her). I generally go by Lilly, but I like and will answer to either name. I finished my bachelor’s in religion and cultural studies at University of Central Florida. During COVID, I decided to do something different with my life, and after searching online, I found the combination of religion and culture at Candler School of Theology and applied to the M.Div. program. I knew taking this step would be the hardest thing I’ve done in my entire life as I left my home community, but I was very excited about it. I’m excited to learn through experience as I work with Rev. Maddie and the Beloved Community. I love this energetic and passionate community, and I have great expectations for our future together as we tackle the hard work of forming a fellowship that fosters flourishing. I have so much to learn from this community, and I pray that my service will benefit you even as you bless me.

Emory University Chaplaincy Recap: Inter-Religious Council

On Monday, April 28, the Inter-Religious Council met for its last meeting of the academic year, where we celebrated our graduating seniors and reflected on our year together. During the 2024-2025 year, we met each Monday for learning and dialogue, using some of our meeting times to visit the Emory Sukkah during Sukkot, an Iftar during Ramadan, a Sikh langar-style dinner with kirtan, and a sound bath meditation. Some meetings also featured OSRL chaplains and a representative from Georgia Interfaith Power and Light. Emory University Chaplaincy Recap: Emory Buddha Day
On Thursday, April 24, Emory Buddhist Life and Emory Buddhist Club hosted this year’s Buddha Day Celebration at Emory, which was a joyful and meaningful gathering of students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and community members. The evening included reflections, chanting, meditation, and the traditional Baby Buddha bathing ritual. We were honored to hear from professors, student leaders, and spiritual guides who shared wisdom and inspiration. The event highlighted the values of peace, compassion, and community in a shared sacred space. We concluded the celebration with a shared vegan meal. The event was co-sponsored by the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics, Emory Buddhist Club, Tzu Ching, and the Thai Student Association.

Join us on Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the release of Rabbi Or Rose’s new book My Legs Were Praying: A Biography of Abraham Joshua Heschel. The event will take place at Hebrew College and on Zoom.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972) was a gifted Jewish theologian and scholar, as well as an impassioned social activist. His reputation has grown significantly since his death over fifty years ago. What can we learn from the unflagging efforts of this revered twentieth century figure today? How can we share key elements of his call for “moral grandeur and spiritual audacity” with younger people seeking to engage in spirituality grounded activism? What might Heschel have to say to the next generation?

Tamid of Hebrew College is offering an online course, "Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity": Heschel's Legacy Today, a three session course taught by Rabbi Rose, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Thursdays May 15, May 29, and June 5.
