Remembering the Duke Alumni Who Died on 9/11

In memory of the six Duke alumni who perished in the attacks on New York and Washington, Duke planted a grove of six trees in Keohane Quad.

On Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m., as occurs on each anniversary of the attack, members of the Duke community will lay a wreath on Duke’s 9/11 Memorial plaque in Keohane Quad to remember the six Duke alumni we lost on that day:

Men Have Bone Loss Similar to Women. A VA Program Helped Them Catch It Early

Older men could avoid painful and costly fractures if osteoporosis screening were expanded beyond women to include those at risk. A Duke-led study showed that a nurse-led Bone Health Service dramatically improved screening, treatment and long-term medication use among male veterans, many of whom had undiagnosed low bone density. By identifying at-risk men earlier--before a fracture occurs--this model offers a proactive, cost-effective way to protect independence and quality of life as the population ages.

This research was supported by the Veterans Health System Research.

Duke researchers are studying the long-term physical and emotional impacts of natural disasters, from hurricanes in North Carolina to the 2004 Indonesian tsunami. Psychologists emphasize that while most people recover, anniversaries of events can trigger distress, and stigma still prevents many from seeking mental health support. Duke teams are testing interventions such as Psychological First Aid, community-based surveys, and resilience-building school curricula to address trauma and coping. Their work highlights that disasters not only damage infrastructure but also reshape mental health, biology, and community well-being for years afterward.
