Teaching Civil Discourse: ‘An Ethical, Moral Responsibility’

Duke University is working to foster civil discourse and respect for diverse viewpoints among students, especially amid rising polarization in the U.S. The Civil Discourse Project, led by Abdullah Antepli, seeks to create a healthy environment through open dialogue and emphasizes the broader consequences of ineffective discourse. To tackle these challenges, Antepli aims to expand civil discourse initiatives, such as longer visits from experts and regional faculty training. Provost Alec Gallimore has also introduced programs to promote diverse perspectives and facilitate difficult discussions, reinforcing Duke's commitment to nurturing understanding and respect in a complex social landscape.

Celebrating the Centennial...

Centennial Spotlight:

This week's centennial celebration feature is alum Judy Woodruff (T '68), acclaimed broadcast journalist covering politics and news for five decades at major networks, including NBC, PBS and CNN. Woodruff was involved in the Student Union, Publications Board, Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Associated Students of Duke during her time as a student. Recently, Woodruff moderated the centennial celebration's Presidential Panel, featuring discussion among Duke's current and former university presidents: Vincent Price, Nannerl O. Keohane and Richard H. Brodhead.

Honoring Joel Fleishman

Joel L. Fleishman, the founding director of Duke University's public policy program, passed away at 90. He served as a transformative faculty member for over 53 years and was deeply respected for his contributions to the university and philanthropy. President Vincent Price lauded Fleishman's leadership and mentorship, while Provost Alec D. Gallimore highlighted his embodiment of Duke's values. A passionate advocate for social justice rooted in his Jewish faith, Fleishman was known for his generosity and dedication to philanthropy, reflected in his involvement with organizations like the Mesorah Heritage Foundation. He also had a notable talent for networking, cultivating friendships globally and sharing his love for food and wine. His legacy at Duke includes the Joel Fleishman Distinguished Professorship and a commitment to the values he championed throughout his life, inspiring countless students and colleagues.

Can Debt-For-Nature Swaps Help Achieve Climate Goals?
Elizabeth Losos, an executive-in-residence at the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability and adjunct professor at the Nicholas School of the Environment, led a panel at the recent Climate Week in New York called “Scaling Debt-for-Nature Swaps to Tackle Debt, Climate, and Biodiversity.” The concept was created to help financially struggling nations get relief from foreign debt payments in exchange for committing to carry out conservation and climate activities. Losos said she believes small adjustments to the debt-for-nature swap idea will not be enough to have a meaningful effect, and she and other colleagues will suggest that making the size of both the debt relief and the conservation projects will have a more significant impact.
