Julian Rodriguez, a broadcast journalism specialist at The University of Texas at Arlington, and his colleagues at Catholic University of Colombia and The Weather Channel en Español have been nominated by the National Academy for Television Arts & Sciences for a 45th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Award in the Outstanding Investigative News Coverage in Spanish category.

| Outstanding Assessment Practitioner Award
|
One faculty member, one staff member, a staff runner-up, and a faculty runner-up will be recognized with the Outstanding Assessment Practitioner Award in September. Nominees will be full-time faculty or staff members who exceed their job's assessment requirements to promote teaching and learning. Outstanding Assessment Practitioners will each receive a $1,000 honorarium and trophy, and runners-up will each receive a $500 honorarium and trophy. Submit a nomination form by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9. Direct any questions about the Outstanding Assessment Practitioner awards to Alexander Anokhin.

UTA Police Officer Jason Norrid graduated from West Texas A&M with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in December 2021 and set out to fulfill his life-long dream of being a police officer. While in college, he gained experience as a public safety officer at Lubbock Christian University, and after graduation, he got his start as a police cadet at Lubbock Police Department. In December 2022, He started at UTA PD, excited to return to the University atmosphere and serve as a mentor and guardian to college students and the UTA community.
Norrid received a Life-Saving Award in May 2024 for his efforts during an emergency involving a student.
“Officer Norrid’s quick and decisive actions in a critical moment exemplify the kind of bravery and competence that we strive to achieve here at UTA and demonstrate why he is a great addition to this department,” Assistant Chief of Police Jennifer Stephenson says. “His actions show his deep commitment to ensuring the safety of students, faculty, and staff. By saving a life, Officer Norrid made a significant and tangible impact on the campus community.”
Norrid takes pride in providing exceptional police services, prioritizing professionalism and continuous improvement. “I get to protect and impact the lives of the campus community. I also get to work with some of my best friends,” he says. “It is the best job in the world.”

MAFE Faculty Fellows Program

UTA student to compete in the Olympics
|
Aerospace engineering major Austen Smith will compete in the women's skeet shooting qualification round of the Olympics on Saturday, Aug. 3, with the final slated for Sunday, Aug. 4. Smith made her first Olympic appearance at 18 at the Tokyo Olympics in women's skeet and placed 10th overall.

MAV Ready: Evacuation Stair Chair Training

The Building Emergency Safety Team (BEST) and Environmental Health and Safety hosted MAV Ready: Evacuation Stair Chair Training last week. BEST coordinators and floor assistants learned how to use evacuation stair chairs that can be utilized by wheelchair users during an emergency evacuation. BEST coordinators and floor assistants serve as primary contacts for their unit, department, or building in emergency situations.
