Building Georgetown: Hwy. 29 improvement project
Construction has started on a traffic improvement project for Hwy. 29 west of I-35.

Project will improve traffic flow in front of the Wolf Ranch shopping districts by adding a third travel lane in each direction. It will also extend left-and right-turn lanes on the 0.6 mile stretch of Hwy. 29 from the driveway to Academy Sports and Outdoors (just west of Wolf Ranch Parkway) through the southbound I-35 frontage road 🙌. This project was developed in partnership between the Texas Department of Transportation and the Georgetown Transportation Enhancement Corporation, which exists to make transportation enhancements that spur economic growth in Georgetown.

Construction on this project is expected to be completed by late summer 2027 📅. Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures. We will share major lane closure and project information here during construction.

TxDOT is managing construction for this project, which is funded by $10 million in GTEC funds 💵. The lead contractor is Dan Williams Co., a Texas-based construction firm that also is heading up the Williams Drive Enhancement Project👷.

Updated Unified Development Code in effect Sunday
🎉 The City’s updated Unified Development Code approved by City Council in August goes into effect Sunday, Nov. 1.

The UDC is the primary land development regulation tool in Georgetown. The update was based on the 2030 Comprehensive Plan, planning best practices, and current development patterns. The updated UDC is easier to read, easier to use, and brings older rules up to date.

Public input helped inform the updates to the code, including:
-Updating multifamily zoning districts to enhance compatibility by supporting lower-density multifamily and adding criteria to promote high-quality development.
-Providing more residential options for infill development and smaller lots sizes through the new Residential Mix and Residential Suburban districts.
-Enhancing landscaping, water conservation, and tree mitigation and preservation by updating landscaping regulations to focus on native plants in addition to updating tree preservation and mitigation regulations to provide greater protection for trees.
-Clarifying and improving the readability of the code, including clarity about procedures and better definitions of review criteria, as well as revising language to create more certainty for applicants and residents.

SU 560 groundbreaking last week
Southwestern University and the City of Georgetown last Friday celebrated a milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony for Southwestern University 560 and the Customer Service Center.

SU 560 will extend Southwestern’s educational mission beyond the classroom, bringing together education, culture, and community through hands-on learning, career opportunities, the arts, and spaces to gather and explore.

The City of Georgetown’s $56 million Customer Service Center will be the first tenant in a new destination for dining, entertainment, and enjoying the outdoors in our community.

The facility was approved by Georgetown voters in a November 2023 bond election. The 75,500-square-foot facility will be home to more than 300 City employees and will bring together the City’s development-related departments as well as key resident-facing departments into one location. Construction is set to begin in January next year with completion in mid-2028.

Tools of the Trade: City arborist
Did you know we have our own arborists? For National Planning Month, we’re taking Tools of the Trade outside with Rachel, our City arborist, to see how trees and landscaping fit into that process and some of the tools used to make sure what’s on the plans matches what’s happening on the ground. 📏🌿

There’s a lot more that goes into a building project than just the building. From trees and landscaping to site plans, sidewalks, parking and everything in between, our Planning team works to make sure all the little pieces of a project come together.
