Jerome China: Found and Reclaimed |
February 12 – March 20, 2025
Visual Arts Building Gallery (100 Culver Avenue)
Opening reception: Wednesday, February 12 | 4-7 p.m.
(Artist Talk: 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.)
JC Fridays evening hours: March 7, 4 – 7 p.m. |
The NJCU Visual Arts Gallery is pleased to hold an exhibition of the Jersey-City-based sculptor, Jerome China. "Found and Reclaimed" is an exploration of rediscovery, transformation, and the reclamation of what was once thought to be lost, forgotten, or overlooked. In this exhibition, the artist investigates the idea that what is "found" is often more than just a physical object or a moment in time; it is the reawakening of something deep within us, something that holds meaning, power, or beauty that was hidden in plain sight or lost to time. This work challenges the notion of permanence, suggesting that everything has the potential for reclamation, whether it’s a forgotten memory, a discarded object, or a part of our own identity.
The works featured in "Found and Reclaimed" utilize metal sculpture to tell stories of rediscovery. These pieces examine how the act of reclaiming something—whether a personal narrative, a physical object, or an abstract concept—can give it new life, purpose, and significance. The artist presents "found" objects and ideas that were once discarded, reimagined, or altered, breathing new life into them and reflecting on the potential inherent in reinterpreting what has been overlooked.
Jerome China was born in 1961 in Richmond, Virginia. He received his early training as the first artist in residence at All Iron Works commercial welding and fabrication shop currently located in Hoboken, N.J. In addition, he studied with blacksmith Paul Januz at Gravity Line Forge. These residence experiences provided a balanced foundation in welding, blacksmithing, and metallurgy. He has lived in New York and Virginia and currently resides in Jersey City.

January 30 – March 7, 2025
NJCU Lemmerman Gallery | Hepburn Hall, Room 323 |
Artist Talk: Thursday, March 6, 12 – 1 p.m.
Closing reception: Friday, March 7, 4 – 7 p.m. (part of JC Fridays) |
The NJCU Lemmerman Gallery is pleased to present "Pat Lay: Hybrid", to showcase highlights of the prolific multimedia artist, Pat Lay, who is based in Jersey City. Over two decades Lay’s artwork has explored technological metaphors of human experience. Her sculptures, made of fired clay, computer parts and other readymade elements, are hybrid forms that have cross-cultural references and question what it means to be human.
In Lay’s collages, digital images scanned from computer circuit boards are transformed into a new matrix. Reminiscent of Buddhist mandalas, these abstractions are created in response to our world of technological advancement and digital progress. In her ongoing series, "Soul Bots and Nested Bots", she embeds computer parts such as aluminum heat sinks and cooler fans in organic clay forms, suggesting possible hybrid creatures and plants of the near future. “How are we as humans changed by the new advances in technology?” Lay asks. By working both two-dimensionally and three-dimensionally, Lay seeks answers to the question through visual and tactile explorations.

"Keep Calm and Get a Lawyer" with Inna Shapovalov, Immigration Lawyer |
Tuesday, March 4, 4–5:30 p.m.
Science Building, Room 123 |
Calling all NJCU students and staff! Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from Inna Shapovalov, a powerhouse in U.S. immigration law with a globe-trotting career and decades of experience.
What’s on the agenda?
A Personal Journey: Growing up in an immigrant family and what shaped her path to law.
Behind the Curtain: How her work as an immigration lawyer evolved under five U.S. presidents: Clinton, W. Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden.
Stories: Tales of resilience, heartbreak, and triumph from her case files.
The Hard Truths: Why some people with “illegal” status can’t seek legal change—and how they end up in that position.
The Big Picture: The intersection of power, privilege, and messy reality in the U.S. immigration system.
Why you don’t want to miss this:
Inna Shapovalov isn’t just a lawyer—she’s a storyteller, advocate, and fighter for immigrant communities. She’s lectured across the U.S. and Latin America, tackled cases from all angles, and speaks multiple languages (Russian and Spanish, among others). With degrees from the University of Illinois, California Western School of Law, and additional studies in Germany and Israel, she’s as worldly as the clients she represents.
This is your chance to ask questions, learn from her journey, and get insights into a system that touches millions of lives every day.
Want some one-on-one time with Inna?
Inna is offering FREE private legal consultations (via Zoom) for NJCU students and staff on Wednesday, March 5, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. You will receive a Zoom link when your appointment is confirmed. To book your consultation, email Dr. Donna Farina at dfarina@njcu.edu. Spots are limited.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.
The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in 15th century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.
A sweeping score and powerful story make The Hunchback of Notre Dame an instant classic. Audiences will be swept away by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical.
