WEEKLY UPDATE – April 6

Happy spring! As nature awakens with vibrant blooms and melodies, we're delighted to highlight the Cultural Centers and the resources they have to offer. As always, if you have any general questions, you can contact our office by phone, chat, or email. If you have specific immigration questions, you can also make an appointment with your ISSS adviser online. 

The Cultural Centers serve as outlets for student-run programs to explore social issues and identity. The centers bring students together to increase their understanding and embrace their roles as members of a diverse community, locally and globally. Their programs explore race, ethnicity, class, and culture-based topics through creative and engaging dialogues and workshops. Learn more about their resources, online programs, and events this semester »

Private appointments are now open! See available times here. The Gender Affirming Clothing Closet is an on-campus resource with the intention of providing  USF students access to free clothing and accessories within a safe space. This resource supports trans and gender non-conforming students who may face barriers to accessing affirming clothing, including safety concerns, financial challenges, and limited access to inclusive shopping spaces.

Missed our tax workshop? Access the recording here. The tax filing deadline is April 15. You can file your taxes using the online tax preparation software called Sprintax through MyISSS. In order to receive the discounted tax filing fee, log in through MyISSS and click on the Sprintax link on your homepage. Please note that the discounted fee covers free federal tax filing only and not state filing.

Missed the H-1B workshop with David Gluckman? You can still watch the recording. Learn about your options to remain in the U.S. after completing your studies, as an immigration attorney explains employment pathways for F-1 students, with a focus on the H-1B work visa. Handouts from the workshop can be picked up at the ISSS Front Desk.

April 6–10

Join the Latine Undergraduate Network of Activists (LUNA) for a week dedicated to uplifting undocumented students through community, education, and celebration. In honor of LUNA’s 10th anniversary, this year’s programming includes a solidarity vigil, creative workshop, wellness-centered event, legal panel, and a final night of cultural performance and storytelling. UndocuWeek creates spaces where students can feel seen, supported, and celebrated — we invite the USF community to show up and stand in solidarity. Open to the USF community.

Tuesday, April 7 | 6:30–8 p.m.
McLaren Complex 252

The 16th annual Social Justice Passover Seder will explore global climate change and environmental justice through the retelling of the Passover story. Attendees will reflect together on themes of liberation while connecting them to today’s environmental challenges. This year’s event will feature a collaboration with Dayenu, a Jewish nonprofit organization dedicated to confronting the climate crisis. Open to USF students.

This free and public event features Gamelan Sekar Jaya in a vibrant performance of traditional and contemporary Balinese dance and music, led by guest artists Ida Ayu Wayan Arya Satyani and Ida Bagus Made Widnyana. Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Balinese performing arts through performances, workshops, and cultural exchange between Bali and the United States. Part of our Immigration Insights sessions, ISSS will be offering an online session to talk about recent and potential immigration changes covered in our March email. Information about what these changes can look like, their potential impact, and how students can prepare will be covered. Students will also be given an opportunity to ask questions. The session will not be recorded.

Celebrating 10 years of the MIMS program, this conference brings together alumni, scholars, advocates, and community members to reflect on migration today and the work shaping the field. The day will feature panels, presentations, roundtables, and workshops that highlight collaborations between academia, activism, and impacted communities while honoring the MIMS community. If you are requesting an immigration document or letter from our office, remember that requests are processed within 10 business days. Make sure you plan accordingly so you have enough time to receive your document before you need it. All ISSS requests should be submitted through the MyISSS student portal (log in to your MyISSS account, go to Requests & Documents, and select the appropriate icon on the right side of the page). You can view our MyISSS Student Handbook for assistance with your submission.    

Click the Chat with ISSS button on the bottom, right corner of any ISSS web page, and the ISSS team can assist you with your inquiry.
