Reconnecting with Our Hearts: Science, Technology, and Literature

Lunch served starting at 2:30 pm
Join us for a book talk with S.K. Oshi as he discusses his debut book Departure. This science fiction novel tells the story of Amina, a young woman who dreams of going on a sacred journey to explore the stars. But her dream is challenged when a chance encounter uncovers dark truths about her most closely held beliefs. Follow Amina’s trials and adventures as she navigates the demands of family, friendship, love, betrayal and the ruthless competition to earn a spot on the next interstellar mission. Buffet lunch will be provided starting at 2:30 pm.
S.K. Oshi is an author of science fiction who enjoys writing stories about human values and beliefs in faraway worlds. As professional futurist and technologist he enjoys building worlds where alternative technologies, political structures, and complex characters get entangled in unique ways and create settings for timeless human struggles: belonging, identity, love, justice, and faith

MindfulEmory Student Retreat

Join the University Chaplaincy and Office of Sustainability Initiatives of MindfulEmory for a contemplative retreat for students. The retreat will offer time to slow down, build community, and support resilience through yoga, a sound bath, meditation, journaling, mindful eating, bonsai workshop, and gentle group practices. It is free and open to all Emory University students. A vegetarian lunch will be provided. Attendance will be capped.

All members of the Emory community are invited to join in the celebration of Buddha’s life and teachings with Emory’s Buddhist and interfaith communities. Popularly known as Buddha Jayanti Vesak/Vaisakhi/Visakha Full Moon Day, this holiday commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and final passing of the Buddha. We will celebrate this occasion with traditional Buddhist chanting, Dharma reflections, and a communal vegetarian meal.

Emory University Chaplaincy Update: University Chaplaincy Receives $10,000 ‘Faith and Health Pipeline Grant”
We are delighted to share at the end of last week, Interfaith America granted us a $10,000 “Faith and Health Pipeline Grant” to continue work we began in the pandemic, teaching students of different faiths to work with spiritual leaders and communities on public health education, trust, and access.
We look forward to hiring student interns for this community-based learning experience in the fall and participating in the larger nationwide Faith and Health grant network. Emory University Chaplaincy Recap: South Asian Sacred Arts Showcase
On Friday, April 3, Emory Hindu Life hosted our South Asian Sacred Arts Showcase, highlighting the incredible talent across our student community in one of our final premiere events of the semester. The evening featured performances in traditional Indian vocal music and classical and folk dance forms, with contributions from Emory HSA, EKB, Suri, and Savera. We concluded with a moving communal Arti that brought performers and audience together in a shared moment of reflection. Across South Asian religious traditions, the arts have been a central force in transcending boundaries of difference, and we’re so thankful to our talented students for bringing that spirit to Cannon Chapel.

On Saturday, April 4, Emory University Chaplaincy partnered with the Muslim Students Association and other copsonsors to host the Emory Eid Celebration in the Emory Student Center. The event was the culmination of a meaningful month of Ramadan and included prayers, remarks from students, staff, and alumni, learning and community activities, opportunities to give to important charities, and of course delicious food and drinks. International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) is a long-standing collaboration between the Emory University Chaplaincy and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The purpose of these lunches is to extend a warm welcome, share helpful resources from our sponsors, and create a space for the international community to gather over a free meal. ICFL is held in Cannon Chapel's Brooks Commons from 11:30am - 12:30pm.

Mindfulness Circle at Interfaith Center

Clothing collection is beginning for Emory Buddhist Club's Clothing Swap. Drop off any items of clothing you no longer want at one of the drop off locations listed above, then come to the clothing swap to find new clothes. The first two hours of the first day of the swap, April 9, will feature free acai bowls and inter-religious dialogue about sustainibility with Emory Hillel. All remaining items will be donated to local non-profits or recycled. Nothing from the clothing swap will be sent to a landfill. Learn more here.

Emory Buddhist Club: Day-Long Vipassana Meditation Retreat at Kim Cang Monastery

The Kim Cang Monastery will be hosting a day-long retreat soon. The Monastery was created by Vietnamese Buddhist teacher, Thich Hanh Dat and focuses on teachings from the Mahayana tradition. The retreat will feature an outdoor refuge, several community meditation & Dharma talk sessions, and a free, mindful lunch. This Earth Day, let’s flock together to celebrate our solidarity and care for our Common Home through conversation, singing, and sharing success stories and collective wisdom.
The morning will include live music, exhibitors, a large-group gathering in UUCA's sanctuary from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., and breakout sessions from 11 to 11:45 a.m. exploring the spirit, strategy, and resourcefulness needed for the road ahead. Poll Chaplains and Peacekeepers can help provide a calm, moral climate for citizens to exercise their sacred right to vote and de-escalate potential conflicts that hinder voting.

Aspen Religion Fellows: About the Fellowship
Applications due: May 1, 2026
In a world that is becoming increasingly multi-religious and multi-ethnic, we need leaders who understand the power of religion and can bring the practices of religious pluralism into the spaces where they live and work. The Aspen Institute’s Religion & Society Program is launching the Aspen Religion Fellows, a new fellowship designed to support rising leaders who are committed to advancing equitable public pluralism.
The fellowship will bring together ten rising leaders, ages 25–40, for an 18-month cohort-based experience focused on learning, leadership development, and action. Fellows will engage deeply with religious pluralism, explore how it intersects with major issues of our time, and develop projects that bring pluralism practices into their own professional communities.

Love as a Force for Social Change

Submit a Manuscript to the Journal of College and Character: Special issue on Love as a Force for Social Change
From disturbingly cheerful predictions about the demise of higher education to rhetoric casting professors as adversaries, postsecondary institutions face a steady stream of criticism and hostility. This negativity demoralizes us at times, yet those of us who work on college campuses often describe our vocation as a labor of love. We know of faculty inviting international students to their homes when they have no place to go over breaks, residence hall directors spending nights in hospitals with students facing injury or illness, student activists risking expulsion and arrest standing up for oppressed communities. These stories (and so many more) exemplify the beloved community, a term first used by philosopher, Josiah Royce, then popularized by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to describe people working together interdependently toward a vision of compassion, peace, and recognition of the inherent worth of all living beings.
In this special issue, we seek your stories of universities as beloved communities. To be sure, higher education falls short of this idea in many ways. But those shortcomings are already well-documented, hence our desire to offer a counternarrative.

The Eagle Food Pantry is a free food pantry for Emory University Students housed at Bread Coffeehouse. We are open Fridays from 9 am-5 pm during the semester and can be found at 1227 Clifton Rd. Students can visit the pantry as many times as needed and there is no food limit.
Donations can be made through our Amazon wishlist, our website, or dropped off at Bread Monday-Thursday 12-5 pm. Our most desired items are pasta, pasta sauce, oatmeal packets, peanut butter, jelly, granola bars, fruit cups, canned beans, canned veggies, and canned soup. Emory University Chaplaincy: Chaplain Office Hours in AMUC 125
Monday-Friday during Term, Noon-2 p.m., AMUC 125
Emory University Chaplaincy chaplains are available Monday through Friday from approximately Noon-2 p.m. during term in AMUC Suite 125 to offer pastoral care and have meetings with students, faculty, and staff. The general schedule is below and may vary semester to semester.

Great Lent

In Orthodox churches, the first day of Lent marks the beginning of the Great Fast, the final six weeks of a 10-week period leading up to Holy Week and Easter (Pascha).

Commemorates the Passion of Jesus Christ, i.e., his death by crucifixion.
Pascha

Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox
Celebrates the resurrection from death of Jesus Christ. It is the oldest and most important festival in the Christian year and initiates the 50-day period culminating in Pentecost.
Yom HaShoah

Tradition: Judaism
Memorializes the six million Jews who died as victims of the Nazis during World War II and emphasizes respect for human dignity. Its observance is not limited to Jews.
Vaisakhi
Tue., Apr. 14, 2026
Tradition: Sikhism
Occurs on the first day of the solar year. It is primarily an agricultural festival, celebrating the harvest, and is especially important in North India. It is named after the month Vaisakh. For Sikhs, it is also the anniversary of the creation of the Khalsa (the “Brotherhood of the Pure”) in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh.
