Grading Tips for U

For faculty, the end of the semester is often associated with grading. Here are a few tips to help make grading easier.

  • When setting up assignments in Canvas, make sure to set up rubrics in each assignment. This allows you to tie your assessments to your learning outcomes, lets students see how points are distributed, and makes for easy grading in SpeedGrader in Canvas.
  • Digital Learning Technologies also supports the tool Gradescope, which leverages computers and artificial intelligence to streamline tedious parts of grading.
  • Remember that Turnitin in Canvas provides information on plagiarism detection, but the AI detection score for this software has been turned off for the U due to problems with reliability.

We still have several weeks to go before the end of the semester. Take that time to familiarize yourself with the U of U Grading Policies, and how they may financial aid or international students.

Collecting Feedback from Students DURING the Semester

Although the University automatically collects student course feedback at the end of the semester, sometimes you want to know how things are going before the class ends. You have an opportunity to collect mid-semester feedback from your students. The mid-semester feedback window closes in early November. By default, your courses will not receive a mid-semester survey.

If you want mid-semester feedback, please follow these steps:

  1. Click here to view your list of courses.
  2. Find the course tile and click "Create."
  3. Set the start and end date for your survey and click "Launch."

Need help? Visit our Mid-semester Feedback Quick Start Guide or email us at scf@utah.edu.

The following free-response questions are used to collect feedback from your students:

  • What do you like about the course?
  • What aspects of the course would you like to see changed? How?
  • What does the instructor do to help you learn?
  • What could the instructor do to improve or increase learning opportunities in this class?

If you opt-in for mid-semester feedback, your students will receive an emailed link to access the survey on the survey start date. Students can also log in with their uNID and CIS password at scf.utah.edu.

You will receive the results of the mid-semester survey the day after the survey end date. The results of mid-semester surveys are confidential to you, the instructor. Your department will not have access to mid-semester results.

University Professorship – Funding Opportunity

The University of Utah’s University Professorship is a special rank that recognizes tenure-line faculty who have demonstrated extraordinary skills in teaching, distinguished scholarship in their field, and an interdisciplinary approach to undergraduate instruction. The University Professorship provides time and funding for faculty to launch new Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) projects related to general education courses. We highlight general education courses with this award because they have broad impact across disciplines and can make significant differences in our efforts to provide exceptional educational experiences for students. University Professors hold this special rank for two years. The application cycle for the 2025-27 University Professorship is now open. For more information, see the University Professorship website. Apply by December 2, 2024.
