Dear Alumni and Friends,
We just wrapped up a fun week of Homecoming activities and, like me, I’m guessing you are looking forward to taking a little break to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.
In my family, we have a tradition at the beginning of our Thanksgiving dinner in which each person reflects on what they most cherish about someone else around the table. We draw names ahead of time, so everyone says something (including the toddlers!) and everyone has something said about them. When our soon-to-be daughter-in-law suggested that we start this tradition several years ago, we all groaned and thought it was rather hokey, but we did it and now it is a yearly tradition! The stories shared are genuine; they are filled with laughter and a few sweet tears. In so many ways, it reminds me of the Voltaire quote: “Appreciation is a wonderful thing: it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”
Whether you choose to express your gratitude openly or carry it with you, I hope you all find a way to reflect on what you appreciate in others during this Thanksgiving season. By doing so, I believe we contribute to creating a kinder and more respectful environment for all of us.
During this season of Thanksgiving, you may also consider donating to the winter clothing drive as part of our Vikings Give program. Until December 11, we are collecting clothing for unhoused individuals in downtown Cleveland. In addition, Lift Up Vikes! Resource Center and Food Pantry is always appreciative of additional support to students in need.
I wish you a wonderful, restful break.
Regards,

Student Poet Wins Cleveland Arts Prize
|
Congratulations to student Stephanie Ginese for claiming one of this year's Cleveland Arts Prizes for her poetry collection "Unto Dogs." As Stephanie herself said of winning the prize, "It honestly feels crazy. This is a very prestigious award that has previously honored some of my writing heroes, like Toni Morrison and Kisha Nicole Foster, and I don’t take that lightly.”

The Wisdom of Strength to Love, 60 Years Later
|
In my personal pursuit to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the person rather than the icon, I've been reading Strength to Love, a collection of his sermons published in 1963. Despite the times in which it was written and the Baptist congregation to whom Dr. King spoke, his words transcend the times and relate to our current struggles with prejudice, hatred and injustice.
