Dear friends,
At Tipping Point, the summer is often a time for us to reflect, plan and think more deeply about our work. This year in particular, I’m really looking forward to having some space to think about what’s ahead for us and how we can best support you.
A topic that is always top of mind is how we can stay ahead of the curve on opportunities to level-up our work. AI is clearly emerging as one such opportunity. Here at Tipping Point, we have been doing a lot of learning on the topic—deepening our understanding of how the technology can amplify our impact and exploring the best ways to support grantees to leverage AI in a well-informed, thoughtful way.
Because we believe AI is such a pressing subject for our field, I'll be focusing my newsletter this quarter completely on the topic. To serve as a source of inspiration, below are a few highlights of how grantees are already using the technology to accelerate their work. We also share resources for learning more about AI.
As we plan for our year ahead at Tipping Point, please stay tuned for upcoming capacity building opportunities on the topic! And we’ll continue to provide more updates on this topic in future newsletters, but as always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

P.S. On an unrelated but important note, Governor Newsom recently shared his revised state budget proposal. This post from California Budget & Policy Center serves as a solid primer on the proposal and the potential impacts on our work together. The budget will be negotiated with the Legislature and finalized in July.

Getting Started
Beginning to leverage AI may feel intimidating, but there can be easy ways to get started. For example, at Braven, staff are using AI tools to assist with grant writing, donor research, drafting policy and operating procedures, brainstorming interview questions, and writing and debugging code. They're also using Zoom's AI capabilities for summarizing and analyzing large amounts of information. To ensure staff are aware of the various limitations, biases, and potential inaccuracies that come with the use of AI, Braven has partnered with Google to develop a training program for staff and created a comprehensive internal policy.

| Program Impact
AI can be a powerful tool for expanding programmatic reach and deepening impact. For example, Making Waves has developed a product that provides education and employment coaching for young people through text message. This AI copilot allows the organization to provide personalized guidance at scale, reaching thousands more students and freeing up time for counselors to provide more intensive person-to-person support. Tipping Point is supporting this effort through a capacity building grant that will create a logic model and build evidence for the impact of the AI copilot. You can read more about the project here.

Operational Efficiency
AI can also improve operational efficiency. For example, Canal Alliance has begun restructuring its data model in Salesforce, working with Project Evident (one of Tipping Point’s AI capacity building partners) to build out infrastructure in a way that will leverage Salesforce’s AI features. Because Canal staff primarily communicate with their clients through WhatsApp, they are aiming to integrate WhatsApp and Salesforce. From there, the goal is for Salesforce’s AI to learn from the WhatsApp data, automate responses to simpler client questions, and allow staff to focus on responding to more complex client questions. Canal Alliance has also begun leveraging AI tools for fundraising and human resources. We’re excited to learn alongside Canal Alliance as they roll this out!
