Portrait of Edith Green

Title IX, June 23, 1972

Today we celebrate the 53rd anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any educational program or activity receiving federal funding.

A pivotal figure in the creation of Title IX was Rep. Edith Green of Oregon, whose commitment to education earned her the nickname Mrs. Education. Serving 10 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1955 to 1974, Green was a staunch advocate for education and women's rights. Green chaired the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and led the hearings that paved the way for Title IX. She worked with Rep. Patsy Mink and Sen. Birch Bayh to introduce and pass the legislation, which opened doors for women in athletics, academics, and faculty roles that had previously been closed.

Beyond Title IX, Green's legislative legacy includes authoring the Higher Education Facilities Act of 1963 and the Higher Education Act of 1965. These groundbreaking laws expanded federal support for colleges and universities, including the provision of financial aid to students.

Please join us in celebrating over 50 years of Title IX and the leaders who paved the way, as we reaffirm our commitment to fostering educational environments free from discrimination.
