Taking on reproductive health disparities in Texas

UTA students and faculty are teaming up to address reproductive health disparities in Texas. Working under the mentorship of UTA Assistant Professors Kyrah Brown and Jaquetta Reeves and Clinical Assistant Professor Brandie Green, College of Nursing and Health Innovation students are helping lead a project aimed at the state’s high rates of maternal morbidity among Black women and children.

Qilian Liang, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has been recognized as a fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association. Dr. Liang, who is also an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers fellow, has published more than 350 journal and conference papers and seven book chapters. He has six U.S. patents pending.

| Creating technology for Air Force maintenance training
|
William Beksi, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, is developing a portable computer vision system that integrates augmented reality into aircraft maintenance training for the U.S. Air Force. He is trying to assist Air Force efforts to keep its aircraft in peak operating condition as the military branch attempts to replace the collective knowledge and skills of retiring service members.

| Eric Leidlein retiring after 36 years at UTA
|
Eric Leidlein, executive director of University Housing, started working at UTA in May 1988 as a coordinator of apartments and houses. Since then, he has held leadership roles as assistant director of University Housing, executive director of Management Services, and executive director of Auxiliary Services. Congratulate Leidlein on his last day: Friday, Jan. 26!

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, the UTA Veterans Business Outreach Center is hosting its Third Thursday Think Tank event that is open to the local community, all UTA employees, and students interested in entrepreneurship and business ownership. Guest speaker Tim Ackermann, Navy veteran and lawyer at the Ackermann Law Firm, will discuss intellectual property basics for business owners. In-person attendance for this workshop will be located at the UTA College of Business, Room 609, and virtual attendance will be available via Microsoft Teams. Registration is required.

AA-UA-PO-05 Graduate Assistant Tuition and Health Insurance Support Policy
This policy was formerly named “Graduate Assistant Tuition Support Policy.” Language regarding health insurance was added to clarify that health insurance support is only for individual coverage under the UT Student Health Insurance Plan; and does not include family or dependent coverage or optional dental or vision coverage.

CO-CE-PR-02 University Recycling Procedure
This procedure was updated as part of a regularly scheduled five-year review. Updates were made to align with current practices and procedures. It includes processes for the placement of recycle and trash bins and the procedure for how paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles and aluminum cans are collected for recycling.

CO-CS-PO-10 Outdoor Group Activities and Weather Hazards Policy
This new policy replaced CO-CS-PR-13. It was updated to ensure that event planners who hold outdoor events develop specific plans to protect attendees from severe weather hazards. The policy addresses actions that may be taken by event planners during the planning process to be aware of potential bad weather before, during, and after an event. It also covers actions that may be taken during an event if severe weather occurs and what to do in the aftermath of a severe weather event.

EI-PO-11 Student Pregnancy and Parenting Nondiscrimination Policy
This new policy is being put in place due to changes in the law. Section 51.982 of the Texas Education Code was updated to prohibit discrimination based on pregnancy or parenting status, and the law requires proper accommodations as well as leave of absence for parenting and pregnant students. It codifies existing federal law regarding anti-discrimination and accommodations and expands some protections to pregnant and parenting students.
