Bringing quantum tools to high school classrooms
|
More than 70 high school students and science teachers gathered in Arlington this summer for UTA's Quantum for All workshop and camp. The two-week event is part of a national pilot program—led by Karen Jo Matsler, assistant professor in practice—that provides training to teachers so they can introduce quantum information science (QIS) concepts to students in high school. Although QIS is used for everything from cellphones to MRI machines, it is not typically taught until late in college.

Cherie Keplinger, director of leadership and talent development in the Office of Talent, Culture, and Engagement (TCE), joined UTA in 2019. The positive, supportive environment she works in has given Keplinger the freedom to bring creativity and innovation to her role. In the last three years, she has led her team in establishing many leadership programs, including Aspiring Leaders, MavsSupervisor Success Program, and MavsManager Foundations Program.
“At UTA, a leader is about influence and not specifically defined by a formal title or position. Leadership can be exercised in any direction, and everyone has the potential to be a leader," she says. "TCE developed leadership development framework that supports this mindset and incorporates our new values. Each cohort program has a specific target audience and builds a community of networks across campus."
Keplinger and her team created manager tools for the post Gallup employee-management survey to support leaders in how to interpret scores and explain them to employees. She is also in charge of the annual Administrative Professional Celebration that has grown to welcome 300 participants.
Vice President of TCE Jewel Washington says, “Cherie is an amazing leader, and a true professional who serves others with humility. She is the type of leader who always goes above and beyond the call of duty. Cherie is reliable, demonstrates pride in the work she does, and has enhanced how UTA trains our leaders and employees.”
As a former marathon runner who has always prioritized wellness, Keplinger is a regular visitor to the Maverick Activities Center, where she takes advantage of fitness and wellness programs available to employees. Outside of the UTA campus, one of Keplinger’s favorite places to be is her flower garden. She also enjoys spending her free time with family and her newly adopted dog, Miso.
