Upholding UC San Diego's Principles of Community
|
Dear Tritons,
We care deeply about the well-being of each of you and of our entire campus community.
As the conflict and violence in Israel and Gaza continues, we ask you to stand with the Chancellor and the rest of the UC San Diego community in solidarity against Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate, discrimination, and intolerance. We ask that you never lose sight of the pernicious effects hate and intolerance have on those you live, study, and work with at UC San Diego.
|
The Tritons Belong initiative engages our UC San Diego community in times when many are struggling with a significant issue. Created in response to the current experiences and concerns that arose following October 7, 2023, the initial Tritons Belong efforts focus on Understanding and Compassion in Challenging Times.
UC San Diego encourages our campus communities to engage in compassionate conversation, understanding through dialogue, and connections through our Principles of Community.
Chancellor Khosla’s Nov. 7 statement and University of California President Michael Drake’s Nov. 10 statement affirm this for all of us. We want to reiterate a few key points from their messages, as well as ensure that the Triton community is aware of resources that are available in support of our commitment to compassion and understanding:
|
-
Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of the U.S. Constitution and is revered on our campus. Nearly all speech is legally protected.
-
However, free speech comes with responsibility. Just because we have the right to free speech does not mean we should use it to hurt others intentionally, and we should be thoughtful about how our expressive activity impacts other members of our Triton community.
-
Threats of violence, acts of intimidation, and hostility directed at one another have no place on our campus and will not be tolerated. The student code of conduct policies that protect individuals from harassment and discrimination – as well as policies that protect against abusive behavior – will continue to be enforced.
|
We all belong at UC San Diego. We are fully committed to supporting you as individuals and as a Triton community, and in so doing, making the campus and world a better place.
Sincerely,
Becky R. Petitt
Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Alysson M. Satterlund
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life
