This week, several major higher education organizations and 13 research universities have filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging a recent policy change by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The policy, announced Friday, seeks to implement a standard 15 percent reimbursement rate for NSF grants and cooperative agreements. The lawsuit argues that, "besides its destructive impact on research and training, this latest effort violates longstanding federal laws and regulations that govern grantmaking."
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TELLS COLLEGES TO ADVISE STRUGGLING BORROWERS
Yesterday, the Department of Education issued guidance reminding colleges of their responsibility in helping student loan borrowers repay their loans. The notice coincided with the resumption of involuntary loan collections, which had been paused since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Department officials wrote in the guidance that maintaining healthy federal loan programs “has always been a shared responsibility among student borrowers, the department and participating institutions.”
