How This Doctor Found a Calling

Dr. Heather Whitson’s life purpose came into focus when her love of science was linked to helping her grandmother confront Alzheimer’s Disease. Through her work at Duke, Dr. Whitson has found that Alzheimer's and dementia are diseases of aging that can be prevented decades before initial symptoms set in. Pain Relief Gets an Energy Boost

A new study from Duke University School of Medicine researchers has identified a promising new way to ease chronic nerve pain, offering hope to people whose daily lives are disrupted by conditions like diabetes or chemotherapy‑related nerve damage. Early findings suggest this approach could help nerves heal and reduce pain for longer periods, rather than relying on treatments that only dull symptoms. If future studies confirm these results, this work could lead to therapies that restore comfort, mobility and quality of life for millions of people living with persistent nerve pain.

Using the Physics of Radio Waves to Empower Smarter Edge Devices

Duke engineers have developed a new way to deliver powerful AI to small, battery‑powered devices--promising faster, safer and more energy‑efficient technology for everything from drones to traffic cameras. The new WIreless Smart Edge (WISE) approach allows devices to tap into advanced AI models broadcast over ordinary radio waves. The result could be smarter tools for search‑and‑rescue missions, smoother traffic systems, and more responsive sensors in cities and homes, all without draining batteries or requiring expensive new hardware.

This research was supported by the NSF Athena AI Institute and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

New Partnership between Duke, National Education Opportunity Network to Bring College Courses to Low-Income High Schools

Duke University and the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity have partnered with the National Education Opportunity Network (NEON) to expand college access for talented students from low‑income high schools. Beginning this spring, more than 200 scholars will take a Duke‑taught course, earning transferable college credit and receiving support from teachers and university teaching fellows. NEON, which has already served 50,000 students across 34 states at no cost, connects universities with underserved communities to advance economic mobility.
