In the Executioner’s Shadow, produced and directed by Maggie Burnette Stogner and co-produced with professor emeritus Rick Stack, is scheduled to air on the St. Louis PBS affiliate, KETC-9, on January 17, 10 pm Central. The timing is significant. The documentary will screen between Missouri’s first two executions of 2023. On January 3, the state administered lethal injection to Amber McLaughlin, making her the first transgender woman executed in the U.S. Leonard “Raheem” Taylor is set to die on February 7. The location of the screening is strategic as St. Louis County is the 6th most killing county in the country. The film has been sponsored by Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and presented multiple times at venues across the state. The film has been woven into a consciousness-raising campaign that can reduce -- or eliminate -- the use of Missouri’s death penalty. It was similarly featured in Oregon’s abolition efforts. It is distributed through New Day Films, www.newday.com
