Duke Launches AI Initiative to Tackle Global Challenges

Duke University has launched a comprehensive, university-wide initiative to harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing global challenges. The initiative is structured around four key pillars: Life with AI, Trustworthy and Responsible AI, Sustainability in AI, and Advancing Discovery with AI. Each pillar is led by faculty experts from diverse disciplines, reflecting Duke's commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. The initiative aims to contribute to a global conversation about the new horizons that AI can open up for us, and how to keep it from exacerbating some of our greatest challenges.

Duke Innovation Opens New Window Into Brain and Behavior

Thanks to federal funding, Duke University researchers have developed a new imaging system that allows scientists to capture high-speed, 4D videos of small, freely moving organisms without disrupting their natural behavior. Behavioral studies of animals have improved both basic science and medical research by illustrating connections between brain activity, the animal’s environment and physical responses. This new technological advancement is being looked at for use in neuro-imaging studies and other expanded uses by Duke scientists.

This work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF).

The dedication ceremony, held at the intersection of NC 751 and Science Drive, across from the Washington Duke Inn, celebrated Sanford’s monumental contributions to the state, including terms as governor and U.S. senator, and his transformative impact on Duke University, where he founded the institution that would become the Sanford School of Public Policy.
