Welcome Back, Faculty & Staff! |
Greetings! We warmly welcome all new staff and faculty members joining the USF community. In this newsletter, the Learning Center is excited to share information on how to nominate a student for peer tutoring, our Weeks of Welcome Workshops, our academic support services, and how to stay connected by requesting a one-on-one informational meeting.
|
As faculty and staff members, you can nominate outstanding students to serve as peer tutors. To do so, kindly visit our Faculty Information web page where you can access the nomination form.
|
During the Weeks of Welcome (WOW), students can attend programs, events, and services designed to help new students get involved, find community, and learn more about the opportunities and resources at USF.
The Learning Center is dedicated to enhancing student persistence and self-regulation through academic skills workshops. These workshops cover various topics, such as structured study time, academic mindsets, test-taking and exam-preparation strategies, and more. We invite students to check out the uploaded videos on our Academic Skills Development (ASD) web page for our WOW workshops.

At the Learning Center, we provide specialized academic assistance for a variety of courses through programs such as Peer Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction (SI) for certain biology and nursing courses, and Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses.
Our Peer Tutoring services offer individual and small-group sessions, which can be conducted through Zoom or in person. Our SI and PLTL programs provide weekly small-group study sessions. Enrolling in PLTL can help students earn course credits. For more information about our course-specific academic support services, please visit the Learning Center web page.
Our services for the fall semester are now available.

The Learning Center offers online resources, workshops, and one-on-one academic skills coaching to help students improve their academic performance. Visit the Study Skills and Resources web page for tools and downloadable worksheets.
Additionally, a coach is available for all international students at USF (undergraduate and graduate) who desire assistance in cultural adjustment and developing strategies related to effective communication, collaborative learning, active studying, and time management.
International students can follow the "How to Schedule an Academic Skills Coaching (ASC) Appointment" instructions, and at step #6, select "Academic English Support" from the drop-down menu of programs.

The Writing Center aims to empower students by enhancing their knowledge and skills in writing, including development, organization, style, and structure. Faculty consultants provide one-on-one interactive conferences to support student writers across various disciplines and rhetorical contexts.
During these conferences, writing consultants help students conceptualize and develop ideas, write persuasively and sophisticatedly, and improve their editing skills to meet the expectations of college-level courses. It's important to note that the consultants do not edit or copyedit students' work; rather, they work with students to help them learn how to edit their own work.
For more information, visit the Writing Center web page.
|
The Speaking Center assists students with preparing for public speaking, which includes speeches, oral presentations, team presentations, and visual aid demonstrations.
The coaches at the center are trained peer tutors, skilled teachers, and experienced public speakers who can help with various aspects of public speaking. This includes practicing oral communication skills, researching and writing speech content, developing well-organized, concise, and informative main points, crafting introductions and conclusions, and more.
For more information, visit the Speaking Center web page.
