TB Before and During COVID-19 Pandemic, U.S., 2010–2023

A new CDC study shows how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted TB disease detection and reporting.

TB cases dropped sharply in 2020, then rose from 2021–2023 - not due to less disease, but delayed diagnoses, reduced migration, and strained health systems. Missed cases in 2020 likely resurfaced later, increasing transmission risk. The findings highlight the need to maintain strong TB prevention and control efforts during public health emergencies.
