Dr. Farrell Participates in National Center to Reframe Aging Webinar
Dr. Timothy Farrell, Geriatrics Division Associated Chief for Age-Friendly Care, participated as a panelist in a National Center to Reframe Aging webinar, “Connecting the Dots: Reframing Aging Across the Age-Friendly Ecosystem. Co-panelists included Alyssa Scully from Northwell Health and Megan Wolfe from the Trust for America’s Health. Dr. Farrell highlighted efforts to advance culture change at University of Utah Health to support age-friendly care for older adults, including the “Say This Instead” campaign to oppose ageism. University of Utah Age-Friendly Collaborative Joins the West Health/American Hospital Association Accelerator
The University of Utah Age-Friendly Collaborative recently joined the West Health/American Hospital Association Accelerator that will “turn innovation into everyday practice by helping hospitals adopt and scale technology-enabled solutions that improve patient care, safety and operational performance. Center on Aging Member Dr. Timothy Farrell co-authored a paper recently published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, "One Size Fits None: Developing a Person-Centered Approach to Weight Management in Older Adults".
The paper points out that clinicians are navigating a rapidly evolving weight management landscape driven by the classification of obesity as a chronic disease and recent pharmacologic advances. While BMI (Body Mass Index) is the most commonly assessed clinical measure to gauge weight management, it does not account for the way sex, gender, race, ethnicity, body composition, or other individual characteristics may impact treatment decisions.

The inaugural University of Utah Health Nursing Poster Fair, will be held in conjunction with Nursing Grand Rounds on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in HSEB Alumni Hall (Room 2100). Additional details are included in this flyer.
Following the 8:00 AM Nursing Grand Rounds presentation, we will host a poster fair reception from 8:45–10:00 AM, providing an opportunity to showcase projects, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
This nursing-focused poster fair creates an additional forum for our teams to share their work, complementing the multidisciplinary UUHC Poster Fair each April and expanding opportunities to present scholarships, exchange ideas, and elevate the visibility of nursing.
We invite members from the University of Utah Health nursing community, including the Department of Nursing (RNs, HCAs, MAs, etc.) and the College of Nursing (faculty, staff, and students), to submit abstracts. We welcome projects at any stage of development, spanning conceptual and pilot work through quality improvement, evidence-based practice, research, and innovation efforts that advance nursing excellence and improve outcomes.

Next UCOA Quarterly Summit will be Thursday at Noon, August 13.
Executive Director Ence enjoyed a strategic planning conversation with department director Dr. Alayne Markland. Common vision and objectives discussed, future joint work and development opportunities, and Ence will participate in the upcoming strategy retreat with Center on Aging colleagues.
The UCOA FY 2025-26 annual report will be completed and distributed to the HHS legislative committee and governor’s office in the first week of August. This version will include the first three-year summary of the progress on the Utah Master Plan for Aging.
UCOA dashboard development continues with CON PhD students selecting key metrics to research and connect with stakeholders sources of data. An introductory training was conducted with ClearImpact as the initial elements of the MPA dashboard are put in place. This project will continue throughout the next semester.
One Utah Health Collaborative Death with Dignity Initiative hosted additional input from MyDirectives leadership with an outline of financial implications of creating the long-awaited e-registry for ACP documents. Ence arranged the presentation and is now researching models implemented by other states for their registry. Other vendors considered have been set aside for now. An in-depth interview with the Oregon Science and Health University’s Abby Dotson, who is the director of the Oregon Polst Registry, to assess their model and experience having a registry for a few years. Dotson is also a leader of the National POLST Collaborative.
WINGS sub-committee reviewed the white paper prepared for guardianship background checks and Ence provided data and language for the introductory summary to be reviewed by the WINGS committee and shaped into a legislative request.
Other community engagements included attendance at the AARP Utah event honoring veterans and assisting the DHHS/DAAS preparation for the upcoming family caregiver training and simulation the end of September. Executive Director Ence met with new advocacy director, Eric Hafen, of the Alzheimer's Association to discuss common policy issues to consider for the upcoming session in 2027. Ence will be speaking at the RHAU virtual webinar series on Aug 6 at Noon.
