Creating empathy in nurse-patient interactions

In an era when incivility in hospital settings is rising nationwide, a new animated video series, “The Silent Exchange,” aims to help improve kindness and empathy in nurse-patient interactions. Carolyn Dickens, clinical assistant professor and associate dean for practice and community partnerships at the UIC College of Nursing, and a project partner from OSF HealthCare Little Company of Mary Medical Center, produced two videos that primarily rely on visuals so that the message is accessible to everyone, regardless of language, and represent the perspective of both patients and nurses. Dickens can discuss the publicly available videos and how incivility is detrimental to the well-being of the nurses, who will be celebrated during National Nurses Week, May 6-12, as well as to patient care and outcomes.

New method to safeguard election integrity

As federal support for election security faces major cutbacks, a new study co-authored by Bradley Sturt, assistant professor of business analytics at UIC, introduces a scientifically backed, low-cost solution to strengthen the integrity of U.S. elections. Sturt can explain how this new approach helps detect vulnerabilities in voting machines before ballots are cast, provides stronger security at minimal cost and offers proven practicality and effectiveness based on its successful pilot with the Michigan Bureau of Elections.

History of modern liberalism

In his new book, "Why Everyone Hates White Liberals (Including White Liberals): A History," Kevin Schultz, professor and chair of history at UIC, provides a history of modern liberalism, focusing on how its enemies representing all sides - right, left and more - have worked hard to denigrate it through attacks and caricature. Schultz is available to discuss the book, the attacks' impact on American political life and what can be done to avoid further polarization in the U.S.
