BOYS CC WINS AT MASON INVITATIONAL!
The Mason Comets varsity cross country team rose to the occasion on their home course last Saturday, edging #4-ranked Springboro by just four points to capture the title at the 51st Mason XC Invitational. The meet featured a deep and competitive field, including programs from West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, but the Comets held firm to defend their turf.
Senior Caden Winship paced Mason with a commanding individual victory in 15:43, leading a scoring pack that also included Paras Yadav, Eligh Amshoff, Carson Wyss, and Zach Hayden. Head Coach Tim Pitcher praised the team’s collective grit.
“This was a truly gritty performance from our boys today,” Pitcher said. “To defend our home course against a top-ranked team like Springboro and other strong programs speaks volumes about their determination. It was a tight battle, and every single point mattered.”
Pitcher specifically highlighted the effort of senior Carson Wyss, who held off three Springboro runners in the final mile to secure key points for the Comets. He also credited freshman Tommy Moran for stepping up with a new seasonal PR on the challenging course, showing Mason’s depth and “next man up” mentality.
While the victory was cause for celebration, Pitcher emphasized the bigger picture.
“This win is a great confidence booster, but we know there’s a lot of work to be done. We have our sights firmly set on the postseason, which is six weeks away. We’ll be using the next two weeks in a dedicated training cycle to prepare for the historic Detwiller Course in Peoria, Illinois, where we’ll face some of the Midwest’s top teams.”
The Comets return to action next weekend at Springboro.
Pitcher also expressed gratitude for the community support that made the invitational possible:
“A special thanks goes out to the Mason Boosters and all the parents who came out to set up and tear down the course. Your support is invaluable.”

GIRLS CC THIRD AT MASON INVITE!
The Mason Girls Cross Country team turned in a strong performance at the 51st annual Mason Cross Country Invitational this past weekend, placing third overall in a deep field that featured teams from four states.
Junior Atalia Hawkins led the way for the Comets with an outstanding race, finishing runner-up individually. She was followed by Auna Korostyshevsky, who placed inside the top 15 and continued her steady, consistent start to the season.
Mason’s depth showed with solid efforts from Emily Moran, who nearly broke the 20:00 barrier, as well as Eva Mathur and Tessa Palmer, who rounded out the scoring five.
The Comets placed third behind a strong squad from West Virginia and perennial state contender Springboro, and Head Coach [insert name if desired] noted the team continues to make weekly progress.
Next up, Mason will travel north on Saturday, September 13, to compete under the lights at the Troy Twilight Meet.

MASON FB HANDS EAST 1ST LOSS IN THRILLER AT DWIRE FIELD
The Mason Comets defended their home turf Friday night with a 40–35 victory over previously unbeaten Lakota East, earning a statement win in a back-and-forth GMC showdown at Dwire Field.
The Comets set the tone early with a safety from AJ Kaylor, then extended their lead when Brandon Birdsong broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Mason carried a 9–7 lead into the second quarter and pushed ahead just before halftime on a clutch 30-yard field goal by Max Gogul, taking a 19–14 advantage into the break.
Lakota East responded in the third quarter as quarterback Nile Knutson connected twice with receiver Christopher Bouyer for touchdowns, briefly putting the Thunderhawks in front. Mason answered with a 3-yard scoring run from De’Angelo Birch, setting up a wild fourth quarter.
Trailing 29–26, the Comets leaned heavily on Birch — and the senior delivered. Birch bulldozed his way to two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, finishing with a dominant 28 carries for 214 yards (7.6 avg.) and four scores, including a long run of 32 yards that kept the Thunderhawk defense on its heels. Birch was also 5/12 passing for 59 yeards. His performance anchored a Mason rushing attack that powered the Comets through crunch time.
Lakota East added a late 28-yard touchdown strike from Knutson to Patrick MacFarlane, but the Comet defense held firm in the closing minutes to secure the win.
Birdsong’s explosive first-half touchdown run, Gogul’s steady kicking, and Kaylor’s early safety also proved critical in the victory.
With the win, Mason hands Lakota East (now 2–1) its first loss of the season and improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, keeping themselves firmly in the hunt for a GMC title.
Mason goes on the road this Friday to Oak Hills. The Highlanders are 1-2 on the season and fell 14-9 versus Middletown last week.

BOYS GOLF WEEKEND RESULTS
On Saturday, September 6, the Mason Boys Golf Team traveled to Findlay Country Club to compete for the second consecutive year in the highly selective Findlay Invitational. On a difficult day for scoring due to the wind and dry course conditions, senior Drew Freeman led the team's scoring with a round of 87. The team posted a total score of 359 to finish 12th in the 12-team field.

On Sunday, September 7, the Comets Boys Golfers rebounded with a solid score of 316 at Glenview Golf Course in the Hadley Invitational. Senior Curtis Crimmins led the team with a score of 72 (even par) and finished in an individual tie for 3rd place among 105 players. Additional team scores belonged to sophomore Diego Orozco with a 79, sophomore Logan Harter with an 82, junior Jack Hellman with an 83, and senior Sam O'Donnell with an 84. The Comets finished 8th in a field of 21 teams.
Mason Boys Varsity Golf competes next in the 36-hole GMC Championship Tournament at Walden Ponds Golf Club on Tuesday, September 9, and Wednesday, September 10. The Comets will be seeking to defend their own GMC title.

BOYS SOCCER SHUTS OUT MILFORD
Mason Boys Soccer continued its perfect start to the 2025 season with a 3–0 shutout victory over Milford on Saturday at home.
The Comets controlled the pace throughout the match, with goals coming from John Harris, Shunya Kashiwakura, and Grayson Stern. Playmaker Edward Zha was instrumental in the attack, recording two assists to spark the Mason offense.
With the win, Mason improves to 5–0 overall and 2–0 in GMC play, keeping momentum rolling as conference action heats up.
Next up, the Comets will return home on Tuesday, September 9, to face Middletown in another key GMC matchup.

GIRLS SOCCER BLANKS SETON 1-0!
Mason Varsity Girls Soccer earned a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Seton on Saturday, using a first-half strike and a strong defensive effort to secure the non-conference win.
The lone goal came with 32:51 left in the first half when Liana Kim finished off a well-placed throw-in from Anna Habra. From there, the Comets relied on steady defending and the play of goalkeeper Chloe Wellington, who made several key saves and provided strong leadership in the back to preserve the shutout.
With the win, Mason improves to 3–1–1 overall and remains unbeaten in GMC play at 2–0.
Next up, the Comets will travel to Middletown on Tuesday, September 9, for another conference test.

GIRLS VB WINS 6TH STRAIGHT!
COMETS DEFEAT MERCY-MCAULEY
Mason Girls Volleyball stretched its winning streak to six on Saturday, defeating Mercy-McAuley in four sets, 25–23, 28–26, 21–25, 25–17.
The Comets showed composure in two tight opening sets to seize early control, then bounced back after dropping the third to close out the Saints with a strong fourth-set performance. The win highlights Mason’s growing consistency and momentum as the season progresses.
Avery Brannon led the defense with 8 blocks. Setters Emma Caddell (13 digs, 17 assists) and Addy Bianchini (18 digs, 19 assists, 9 kills) played great all-around games.
With the victory, Mason improves to 7–3 overall and 2–0 in GMC play.
Next up, the Comets will return home on Tuesday, September 9, to host Middletown in conference action.
