Teaching Tips:
Joy, AI, and Syllabus Language |
|
|
I am a big fan of the Teaching newsletter put out by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Put together by Becky Supiano and Beth McMurtrie, it comes out every Thursday and is packed with cool teaching resources. You can subscribe yourself using the link above but I also know folks only have so much bandwidth for another newsletter.
So, for this week's Hub Cap I decided to look through some of the most recent issues and surface some of the shared resources - they focus on joy in teaching, AI and reading, and evaluating syllabus language.
|
-
Joy Cards - these crowdsourced, teaching tips to bring more joy into your classes are fun and you can submit your own ideas too.
-
Using NotbookLM to Boost College Reading Comprehension - One of the biggest fears around AI is that students will use it to forgo reading. Michelle Kassorla and Eugenia Novokshanova share a lesson that they give students asking them to use AI in a very specific way to assist with reading.
-
You might not be thinking about syllabus language at this point in the term but it is never a bad time to reflect on the language in your syllabus and if it is doing what you want it to.

Priority Deadline Approaching!
Small Changes: A Course Improvement Studio 2025 |
|
|
This May we are once again extending the invitation to participate in Small Changes: A Course Improvement Studio.
Past participants reported that the program helped them make small but meaningful changes that improved their courses’ organization and interactivity. Participants appreciated the accountability of the dedicated time and also the fact that they didn't have to do it alone!
Faculty will receive $1000 upon completion of 4 deliverables. The expected participation, about 25-40 hours over the two weeks, will include both sync sessions and also asynchronous work time. More information, including the schedule, can be found in the program description. If spots remain, applications will be accepted until Wednesday, April 30th but the priority deadline is Wednesday, April 9th.
We would like to thank the Deans of each college for generously sponsoring several faculty participants, reflecting their commitment to our teaching community.

The Hub invites you to join conversations about GenAI. These gatherings are an opportunity to ask questions, discuss tasks from the self-paced Canvas course, and connect with colleagues.
If you want to know more about the implications of GenAI for teaching and learning, you have access to the self-paced modules.
