Dear Colleagues,
As our search for San José State University’s inaugural Vice President for People and Culture continues, I am pleased to share that Shawn Whalen will serve as Interim Vice President for People and Culture beginning June 1, while continuing in his role as Chief of Staff.
I asked Shawn to step into this interim leadership role because he currently oversees two of the three units that will comprise the new People and Culture division. His leadership, institutional knowledge, and steady commitment to people-centered practice will ensure continuity and momentum as we continue this important transition.
The creation of the People and Culture division reflects our continued commitment to strengthening how we support our faculty and staff through more integrated, collaborative, and people-centered practices — work that aligns closely with our Transformation 2030 goals and our broader efforts to foster a culture of care, belonging, and operational excellence.
Please join me in expressing gratitude to Jeanne Durr for her distinguished service as Interim Senior Associate Vice President for University Personnel. Jeanne’s leadership and dedication during this period of transition have been deeply appreciated by our university community.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we advance this important work together.
