Laker to Laker: Message from the Provost

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to week five of the semester. By now, every class is well underway, and typically, this is a time when some students have found their tempo and routine, while others are feeling anxious, unsure as to whether they are in the right classes and that they have what it takes. Reassurance, guidance, and advice will be welcomed gifts by all. For the latter group, it will make the difference between persistence and perseverance or discouragement and withdrawal. A note from you this week asking how they are doing and offering support and help may be all they need.
I know retention and student success is top of mind for many of you; it is for me as well; it is part of President Mantella’s first priority for this year. We have been implementing several initiatives and continue to monitor, assess, and adjust. We will use the next few weeks’ newsletters to share these initiatives and open conversation around them. As we engage in this topic, we welcome your voices, your expertise, and your experiences as individuals who are crucial to the success of our students. In the provost’s office, we have data and the ability to direct resources where they are most urgently needed, and where they can have the highest impact. Please do not hesitate to reach out directly or through your chairs and deans. Thank you again for all you do.
This week I am holding several Town Hall sessions to discuss organization and developing capacity in technology. I hope to see many of you there.
Have a great week everyone,
Fatma
