Teaching LLMs to Recognize Student Behaviors: Skills for Multimodal Analysis

Joyce Fonteles

Wednesday, July 9th 12-1 pm | 1400 18th Ave S A2009

How can we use large language models (LLMs) to make sense of complex, real-world data like student movement, gaze, and speech during learning activities? In this hands-on session, PhD student Joyce Fonteles will demonstrate how to turn LLMs into behavior classifiers without fine-tuning, by using prompt engineering, chain-of-thought reasoning, and active learning techniques.

Participants will learn practical strategies for combining outputs from different deep learning models, such as pose estimators and speech analyzers, and guiding LLMs to reason over these inputs in a structured way. Whether you are working with educational data or exploring multimodal analysis in another domain, this session will offer transferable skills for building flexible and iterative workflows using LLMs.

New Anthropic Economic Futures Program

Anthropic has launched the Economic Futures Program to support research and policy development on the economic impacts of AI. Building on its Economic Index, the program will fund research, support evidence-based policy, and expand tools to track AI’s real-world impact. Through grants, symposia, and strategic partnerships, it aims to deliver data-driven insights that help society prepare for shifts in labor markets and value creation.

As AI adoption accelerates, the need for grounded, timely research has never been more urgent. Anthropic’s initiative moves beyond speculation by investing in real-world data, actionable policy frameworks, and cross-sector collaboration.

Applications for research awards (up to $50K) are now open, with symposia proposals due July 25, 2025. Anthropic invites researchers, institutions, and policymakers to join this effort to ensure AI’s economic transformation leads to broadly shared benefits.
