Laker to Laker: Message from the Provost

Dear Colleagues,
I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend with some unscheduled time.
In my own random reading wandering I came across this piece, On the Beauty and Necessity of Structures. I found it thought provoking and beautiful, so I am sharing it with all. I hope you find something useful or enlightening in it.

Updates

Active Shooter Educational Module
Following up on the August 17 e-mail from Provost Mili, this is a reminder that GVSU has created a new video and quiz on how to respond in active shooter situations. The module is available to all faculty and staff on Blackboard Ultra. All faculty are expected to have completed the module by this Friday, September 8. Deans will be notified of the status of faculty completion after that date. As of the end of August, 30.5% of faculty have completed the module. Thank you for spending time with the video and quiz.
The video in the module, as well as an older video directed towards students, is available publicly on the Public Safety web site.
Active Learning Classrooms Feedback Request
The Academic Space Committee is still seeking your feedback about Active Learning Classrooms, especially as it pertains to building the 2024-2025 class schedule. The revised deadline to complete a brief Qualtrics survey is Wednesday, September 6. This is the same survey that was sent to all faculty by email on August 16.
MI-ACE Women's Network: Faculty Institutional Representative
The Michigan American Council on Education Women's Network (MI-ACE) is a professional network for Michigan women in higher education. GVSU has two MI-ACE Women's Network Institutional Representatives (IRs), one faculty and one staff; the faculty IR position is open. This professional development opportunity supports and provides gender equity, leadership development, and networking. IRs serve on the leadership team of the Women's Commission as advocacy co-chairs. See GVSU's MI-ACE website for more information. The selected faculty IR will receive a course reassigned time. To apply, send a letter of interest to wcommission@gvsu.edu by September 8.
Reassigned Time Report
Several years ago, the Office of the Provost agreed to a request from faculty governance to provide an annual report on faculty reassigned time. The latest report, for the 2022-2023 academic year, was published this summer and is available on the Office of the Provost website. Older reports also are available.
