Not Just an Older Person’s Disease

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Rates among young people are climbing, with one in five diagnoses occurring in people younger than age 55. At just 30 years old and with a newborn baby in her arms, in 2024 Sage Collins faced a diagnosis that felt like a bullet: stage 4 colorectal cancer. In shock, she remembers saying, “I don’t want to die. I can’t die. I am a mom.”

ACCOLADES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Larner community members wearing red pictured from above standing in a heart shape

Every year on the first Friday in February, National Wear Red Day® during American Heart Month reminds us that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women—and that’s why our work matters. The Larner community gathered in the Hoehl Gallery for our annual Wear Red photo to support American Heart Month—because the path to cardiovascular health starts with awareness.

More than 200 scientists from throughout the region attended the 16th annual Neuroscience, Behavior, and Health Forum January 30–31 at UVM’s Davis Center—making this year’s gathering the largest in the event’s history. Francisco Quintana, Ph.D., of Harvard Medical School (pictured, left, with Larner Neurological Sciences Chair Peter Calabresi, Ph.D.) delivered the keynote, which is dedicated to the memory of Larner neurologist Gary Mawe, Ph.D.

In February, as part of the two-week Community Engagement and Social Medicine elective, Larner medical students visited the Vermont State House in Montpelier to learn about and participate in policy-related work. During their visit, they attended a presentation by the Vermont Medical Society, toured the State House, and observed active committee meetings.
