Stormwater Task Force Presents Recommendations |
The 2024 Community Survey revealed that 98% of respondents support the Village investing in “enhancing stormwater management systems to mitigate flooding.” Fortunately, a new Stormwater Task Force was already at work reviewing the Village’s current stormwater management system and preparing to present their findings to the Village Board this week.
Why now? While the current system is functioning as intended and continues to provide the level of protection that it was designed to many years ago, the region has experienced more frequent and intense storms. Skokie now receives over 100 million additional gallons of rainfall during a 2 hour, 10-year storm compared to the 1980s when the current system was implemented.
What’s next? The task force made several recommendations to the Board that will be considered as part of the Village’s capital improvement planning and budgeting process
What can I do?
|
-
Confirm that your property is adhering to the Village Code requirement that gutter system downspouts are not connected directly to the combined sewer.
-
If you are experiencing flooding problems in your yard or block, you can contact the Village to request technical assistance to address flooding problems on your property.

Show your Skokie Spirit in Style!
|
Show off your Skokie Spirit in 2025 by purchasing a retro “Skokie Spirit” design on a hat, shirt, mug and more! This merchandise is being sold as a service and not for profit.
Why go retro? In May 1978, the Village launched a “Skokie Spirit” campaign following the attempted Nazi demonstration in Skokie. The eternal flame design appeared on shirts, buttons, bumper stickers and graces the stained-glass window above the Oakton Street door of Village Hall to this day. The communitywide initiative highlighted the community’s diversity, its collective spirit of volunteerism, and the advantages of living in Skokie, including its excellent Village services, schools, library, and cultural activities.
Now, nearly fifty years later, those same attributes are still mentioned by residents as why they chose to make Skokie home.
Want more? Additional exclusive Skokie designs will be rolled out over the next few months.

Respiratory Season is in Full Effect
|
Respiratory illnesses affect the lungs and airways, and they can range from mild conditions like the common cold to more severe diseases such as pneumonia, bronchitis, pertussis, influenza, RSV or COVID-19. These illnesses are often caused by viruses, bacteria, or environmental factors like allergens or pollution.
Prevention
Preventing respiratory illnesses involves a combination of personal hygiene and lifestyle practices:
|
-
Wash Hands: Wash hands frequently, scrubbing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps prevent the spread of germs.
- Avoid Close Contact: Stay away from people who are sick, and avoid crowded spaces during peak illness seasons.
- Vaccination: Get vaccinated against flu, COVID-19, pertussis, and RSV.
- Use a Mask: Wear masks in high-risk areas, especially if you're sick or in contact with vulnerable individuals.
- Healthy Habits: Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and hydration, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep to strengthen your immune system.
|
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of respiratory illnesses vary, but common signs include:
|
- Cough (with or without mucus)
-
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Fever or chills
- Fatigue
- Chest tightness or pain
|
In some cases, symptoms may worsen or progress into more severe conditions, such as pneumonia.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Seek medical care if you experience:
|
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Persistent chest pain or pressure
- Severe cough or coughing up blood
- Confusion or inability to stay awake
- High fever that doesn't subside with over-the-counter medications
- Symptoms that worsen over time or don't improve after a few days
|
Certain groups, including the elderly, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions, should seek medical attention early if they experience symptoms of a respiratory illness.
Timely care and staying hydrated can help manage the symptoms, prevent complications, and promote faster recovery.
