The U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) education rankings for 2024 will be released tomorrow. To understand the rankings, it is helpful to know W&M’s history. Since 1996, our average rank has been #34, with a high of #29 in 2000. Our position had been relatively stable until last year’s change in methodology. Metrics where W&M had historically been strong, such as average class size, faculty with terminal degrees and alumni giving were eliminated, and a new emphasis was placed on social mobility measures (e.g. Pell student enrollments and graduation rates) and faculty research bibliometrics.
With this new methodology, W&M fell to #53. On the eve of the 2024 release, we anticipate that we will remain relatively stable with last year’s ranking. The continued focus on research in the USNWR ranking is consistent with our university objective to strengthen W&M’s research portfolio in various forms of scholarship and sponsored research. More information will be provided about the specific rankings once they are released.

And now, here are the top 5 things to know this week:
|
|
|
-
The next meeting of the Faculty Assembly will be held tomorrow, September 24, from 3:30 to 5 pm. The meeting will be in person in the seminar room on the third floor of Chancellor’s Hall, room 322, and on Zoom. You can review the full agenda ahead of time. The Faculty Assembly represents an important tenet of our shared governance at W&M. I encourage you to attend as your schedules allow.
- As we move through the semester, remember to take advantage of the events and training offered by the Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation.
-
If you have not already done so, please take a few minutes by tomorrow, September 24, to complete the Workday End-User Readiness Survey. Your feedback is extremely valuable to the Workday project team as they develop the foundation for a successful implementation.
-
Please note that William & Mary Information Technology is taking final steps in the transition from Gmail to Microsoft Office 365. Beginning October 29, all faculty and staff should use their official W&M address (e.g. username @ wm.edu) to login and access their Google Workspace applications instead of their @email.wm.edu address. You can find more information about this change on the IT website.
- This week’s shoutout goes to the range of teams involved in preparing for this week’s Board Of Visitors meetings. I’m incredibly proud to showcase the excellent work taking place across W&M.

At the end of this week, we’ll also be welcoming parents and guests to campus for this year’s Family Weekend. Thank you to those who offered to open your classrooms, and I hope you enjoy this energizing time on campus.
