Leaders in Health Care and Academic Medicine |
Rebecca Aslakson, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of anesthesiology, and Kristen Pierce, M.D., professor of medicine, have been selected as 2024–25 Fellows for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM), and Danielle Ehret, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of pediatrics, has been selected as a 2024–25 Fellow for Executive Leadership in Healthcare (ELH). The fellowships prepare women for senior leadership positions in health care organizations, where they can influence positive change.

| Heart and Brain Symposium |
At UVM’s advanced biomedical research center, a team of early-career scientists is exploring the intricate heart-brain connection. These researchers—experts in fields including medicine, epidemiology, chemistry, pharmacology, molecular physiology, and more—showcased their findings at the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health (VCCBH) symposium June 6–7 at the Davis Center.

| New Cancer Therapy Success |
The UVM Cancer Center launched its CAR T-Cell therapy program in February 2023. Now, 12 patients have been treated under the care of James Gerson, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, at the UVM Medical Center and many of those patients are still free of cancer today. UVM’s CAR T program recently earned FACT accreditation for meeting or exceeding quality measures and standards.

ACCOLADES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Numerous Larner faculty, staff, and students volunteered at the medical tent in support of the Vermont City Marathon, held May 26 in Burlington. With Katie Dolbec, M.D., associate professor of emergency medicine, once again serving as medical director, the volunteers were ready to help with anything from minor to advanced care for the runners and spectators.

The Cancer Population Science research program at the University of Vermont Cancer Center recently announced the winners of its pilot awards: Karlyn Martin, M.D., M.S., associate professor of medicine, and Jay Garvey, Ph.D., Friedman-Hipps Green and Gold Associate Professor of Education and executive director for the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

Claire Baptiste, M.P.H., Larner class of 2027, presented a poster at the Wound Healing Society 2024 Symposium on Advanced Wound Care May 14–18 in Orlando, Florida. Her poster summarized barriers—including geographical disparities, mental health issues, and a concentration of specialized facilities in urban areas—that veterans living in rural areas face in managing their wounds.

Katharine Cheung, M.D., Ph.D., M.Sc., interim director of the UVM Center on Aging and assistant professor of medicine, and her mentee, medical student Susanna Schuler ’26, presented their research on tele-palliative care for rural dialysis patients at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine State of the Science meeting in Phoenix this spring.

A celebration of the life of Gary Mawe, Ph.D. (1956–2024), Samuel W. Thayer Professor of Neurological Sciences, will be held on Thursday, June 20, 1:00–4:00 p.m. in the Davis Center Maple Ballroom at the University of Vermont. Hawaiian shirts in homage to Mawe’s playful fashion sense are encouraged, and photos and anecdotes are welcome. RSVP to Bridget.Brisson@uvm.edu.
