Inside Chelsea Square | Weekly Update from Vanderbilt |
| |
|
Hi neighbor,
We hope you are well! This update outlines planned construction activity on Vanderbilt’s Chelsea campus from Monday, March 30, through Sunday, April 5.
|
At a glance: This week’s key community impacts |
-
The 21st Street campus entrance remains closed; access campus via the 20th Street entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, NY 10011).
- A steady grinding noise at moderate levels is expected throughout the week due to brickwork restoration on Seabury.
- Parking on 21st Street and 20th Street remains impacted.
-
The Chapel is temporarily closed to the public as a safety precaution.
- The Close remains impacted by the stormwater infrastructure upgrade and equipment use. A temporary walkway is in place; fencing remains. Soil is being removed from The Close and moved to containers on West 21st Street, with anticipated steady, moderate noise levels from equipment.
-
A steady hammering noise is expected throughout the week as work on the Seabury roof progresses.
- Interior renovation work continues this week with less community impact. The community may notice low to moderate noise levels. The community may also notice increased traffic in the area and visual changes to windows.
|
|
|
Despite what it looks like, our renovation plans do not include a swimming pool. Sorry! This hole is for the stormwater tank that will help manage rainwater on campus; refill and repair will begin in the next week or so.
We promise, the grass will be greener on the other side.

April 23 ticketed event: Big Quarterly: Untold American history through gospel and dance
|
Join us for an evening of conversation and musical performances featuring excerpts from "Big Quarterly," an original musical that brings to life an extraordinary and largely untold chapter of American history. Presented by Vanderbilt University–New York City and produced by NYC–based director and choreographer JōvanDansberry, this special event brings to life the extraordinary legacy of Peter Spencer, a man once enslaved who founded the nation’s first wholly independent Black church in 1813. One year later, he established the Big August Quarterly, an annual gathering in Wilmington, Delaware, that still exists today.

From James Kellerhouse: A note to our community |
I recognize that the recent demonstrations caused disruptions for some of our immediate neighbors and greatly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. As we excitedly look ahead to welcoming our inaugural class this fall, we remain committed to fair labor practices, safe working conditions and ethical construction standards; we continue to work closely with our prime contractor to ensure these commitments are upheld.
Being a good neighbor is something we take seriously, both at Vanderbilt and for me personally. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team or to me directly. And if you’re available, I’d love for you to join us at our April community construction meeting, also known as the monthly Coffee & Construction. We’ll share details and the RSVP soon; we’re looking to mix things up a bit with the meeting time (and the beverages).
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. I am so thankful to be part of this community and look forward to what’s to come.
