Laker to Laker: Message from the Provost

Dear Colleagues,
Just a few words of gratitude for all the voices, views, and perspectives that you have all shared in the past few weeks.
Two weeks ago, we held six town halls related to the future organization of the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing (PCEC), four open to all, and two for the College of Education and Community Innovation (CECI). I want to thank everyone who participated in person and on Zoom, and to those who responded in writing to the survey. I appreciate all the input and insight and the spirit with which they were shared.
Last week, we used this column to share about the collective efforts on retention and student success. I also met with several faculty and staff groups and heard additional suggestions that we will be implementing. The success of every Laker is our collective work. We all have a role to play, and we are all in this effort together. I am always impressed by the level of commitment, passion, and sense of responsibility that every member of this campus feels for our students. This culture is what our students and their parents experience and echo to us, and this makes GVSU unique.
In addition to the constructive feedback, I have also heard an overwhelming sense of excitement and positive feeling about the mood and elevated level of engagement with the students this Fall. I hope we all continue to see and experience this engagement and enthusiasm.
Thank you again for all you do and for your willingness to share candidly.
Best regards,
Fatma

Last Call for 2023 Teach-In Proposals

The final deadline to submit proposals for the 2023 Teach-In is October 18; sessions will be presented November 8 (Pew) and November 9 (Allendale), with hybrid options both dates.
Each year, GVSU holds a university-wide Teach-In, where teams of faculty, staff, and students present informative and engaging sessions, for mutual education on topics of social justice and liberation. More information is available on the website; email teachin@gvsu.edu with questions.

Engaged Scholarship

Congratulations to the Kirkhof College of Nursing and the Interprofessional Simulation Center for their $1.5 million federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration. The project will improve nursing workforce readiness by increasing experiential-learning opportunities using simulation technology. The goal is to increase the diversity of nurses and prepare BSN graduates to serve the healthcare needs of rural and medically underserved populations.
