Student Media was proud to send 13 students to the 2026 National College Media Convention held at the Times Square Marriott Marquis in New York City this past March. Hosted by the College Media Association (CMA), this annual conference offers students a chance meet other college journalists from around the country and learn directly from practicing media professionals. Packed with professional development and networking opportunities, this year's conference included publication critiques and workshops exploring AI tools, media law, graphic design, leadership, podcasting, social media, and more. All attendees were required to submit a detailed learning outcomes report sharing what they learned and how they planned to implement that knowledge to benefit their media group(s). To cap off a successful trip to the Big Apple, The Forge, Mason’s only sci-fi and fantasy magazine, won a 2026 CMA Apple Award, taking home third place honors in the "Division I Best Magazine Cover" category during the conference's closing awards presentation!

Digital Pioneers Academy @ Mason
|
Student Media partnered with University Life to welcome 100 eighth graders from the Digital Pioneers Academy to our office as part of their visit to Mason's Fairfax campus on March 20th. The student visitors met with professional staff and student leaders, toured the newsroom, learned about news production in our video studio, and picked up free swag bags before moving on to lunch in the Johnson Center. A tuition-free public charter school located in SE Washington, D.C. that serves grades 6-12, Digital Pioneers Academy's mission is to "empower students to develop marketable computer science skills and habits of innovation, so that they can experience a future of choice."

Communication major Emma Redden (class of 2025) joined WGMU Radio during her freshman year at Mason and stayed involved all four years of her undergraduate career. Her popular Retro Rewind radio show featured music from the 1960s to the 1990s alongside trivia and background information about her favorite songs and artists. In addition to her role as DJ, Emma developed her leadership skills during her sophomore year when she was promoted to the role of program director.
All that experience across different areas of radio paid off post-graduation when Redden landed a full-time job at Audacy, the second-largest radio company in the United States with over 200 million monthly listeners and 220 stations (including D.C.’s 106.7 The Fan)!

A look back at some cool stuff that happened last semester!
|
A-10 Track and Field Championship
|
For the third year in a row, George Mason hosted the A-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 2nd and 3rd. However, none of the championships have been broadcast since 2023. Using lessons learned from our last broadcast in 2021, we returned outdoor track and field to the air by utilizing two replay machines to capture more field action and a crew of 20 over the two days. Making the achievement even more impressive, we also broadcast two baseball games during the championships. This took the combined effort of student wage employees from the Sports Broadcasting Team, alumni, Film and Video Study interns, and Sport Management 480 students.
