It was a privilege to host CAA’s Provosts’ Council meeting at William & Mary last week. The meeting also included Student Affairs leaders from member institutions. We had productive conversations throughout our time together, particularly around educational implications of generative AI. This powerful and ever-evolving technology creates both questions and opportunities for academic use. AI is a relevant consideration across all disciplines. I’m counting on your counsel and expertise as our institution continues to explore its trajectory. With that in mind, I encourage you to join the November 13 STLI session focused on instructional strategies for embracing our unique voices while leveraging the capabilities of generative AI in writing.

The William & Mary Global Innovation Challenge (WMGIC) will cohost the WMGIC x NATO Countering Disinformation Challenge on Friday, November 1. Undergraduate teams will be judged and mentored by a series of leading experts and officials in the field with the chance to win a $500 prize. Visit the WGC event page for details on how to participate and watch the proceedings. Thank you to those of you who are supporting our competing students.

W&M is partnering with Hillel International on a campus climate review to assess experiences and belonging for Jewish students, faculty, and staff through one-hour, virtual focus groups. The faculty focus group takes place today at noon. Focus groups for staff and graduate students will be held later this week. More information and registration instructions are available on the event page.
-
The Office of Diversity & Inclusion will host new and recent doctoral grads during the IGNITE Future Faculty Development Program this week. Tomorrow, October 29, at 9 a.m., members of the community are invited to a scholar presentation event featuring 20-minute presentations on the IGNITE scholars’ areas of research. Registration to attend is now open.
-
The James Monroe Prize in Civic Leadership is awarded on Charter Day to an undergraduate student who exemplifies the acceptance of just responsibility through leadership for the greater good. Please submit any nominations by this Wednesday, October 30.

This week’s shoutout goes to the Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Council. Over the weekend, they hosted a relay team for the Greensprings24 Race, in line with their theme this year, which focused on inclusion and wellness. W&M’s relay team consisted of students, alumni, staff, faculty, and administrators. Participants raised over $1000 for the ARC of Greater Williamsburg, and a William & Mary person covered all 24 hours of the race–amazing!

Finally, don’t forget that tonight is the much-anticipated return of the Raft Debate.
