April 2026 Newsletter

Unbelievably, we have reached the end of another academic year. As your student prepares to depart East Lansing, it would be a good idea for them to begin downsizing their belongings and, if traveling home prior to moving out, bring items no longer needed for the remainder of the semester. It’s amazing how many additional items students accumulate over the course of the year. Read below for information about Pack Up. Pitch In. programming and how to donate items no longer needed. If your student lives off campus and has items worthy of reuse or to be recycled, the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling accepts some materials during normal business hours.

These last few weeks can be stressful for students as they wrap up papers and exams, projects and student group celebrations. Remind them to care for themselves in body, mind and spirit, using resources from University Health and Wellbeing, nutrition services, student recreation and wellness, or maybe just drinking more water and taking a walk on this beautiful campus.

We know you’re excited about Family Weekend (we are, too!) and want to know the date. We don’t have that information yet, but plan to release the save-the-date in early May, so watch the May newsletter for those dates! The other question we regularly get this time of year is about student season ticket sales. We historically get that information from Athletics in early summer, but sign up for Athletics’ family listserv here to receive ticket information directly from Athletics.

Summertime slows a little on campus, but we will still be here to answer your questions and update you with a monthly newsletter. In the next months we will also be accepting applications, interviewing and training family ambassadors to help new Spartan families get connected to campus and other Spartan families.

To those with May graduates, we wish you all the best and want you to know you’ll always be a part of the Spartan family! And to everyone else, let us know how we can best support you in the coming year.

Take care,
Laurin

Spartan Family Ambassador Applications Open
Spartan Family Connections is offering a new way for families to get involved! We are seeking families with campus experience to share their knowledge with new Spartan families as we continue to build a strong, connected Spartan community.

If you’re interested in becoming an ambassador for Spartan Family Connections, please complete this application. Ambassadors will assist with campus-wide events and help create positive and welcoming experiences for the Spartan Family community. If you can’t come to campus, there are still opportunities for you to get involved!

Graduation Activities and Commencements
Graduating is a monumental event, and the reason our students are here and worth celebrating! That said, we have requests for students taking graduation photos on campus. Over the years, we have noticed behavior unbecoming of a Spartan during photo shoots and are asking for your help in communicating what good Spartan behavior looks like. As much fun as champagne in photos can be, campus has a no open alcohol ordinance, except on home football game days. Please leave the champagne and possible broken glass, both of which are terrible for our squirrels and other wildlife, out of the pictures. Please respect the landscaping by staying out of trees, or walking on flowers or freshly groomed flower beds. It’s probably best to leave the confetti and streamers at home too. Finally, lots of grads want pictures at prime locations, so respect fellow Spartans and move along quickly so others can also take their pictures; don’t take more than 5 or 10 minutes. Landscape services will be landscaping around the Sparty Statue so its ready for those graduation weekend pictures, so don’t be surprised if over the next few weeks, it looks a little barren.

Commencement.msu.edu is the place to look for all information about graduation ceremonies, including where to park, what time each college’s ceremony is, what time doors open and building accessibility. Additionally, you can find building security information on the site. Just like other events, only clear bags are allowed, you may bring cameras and flowers, and flowers will be available for purchase along with T-shirts and other alumni gear. And, we’ll be at Breslin Friday, May 1 for the baccalaureate, masters and Ph.D. ceremonies handing out stickers to you, the families of the grads, celebrating the support you’ve given your Spartan. Be sure to find us near the Gilbert Pavilion at Breslin Center, and CONGRATULATIONS!

Out of the Darkness Walk   April 12: Suicide is preventable, but we have to take action. On April 12,  we’re inviting you to join us to support those struggling, honor those we’ve lost, and build a future where mental health is a priority. This journey isn’t one we take alone. Form a team, bring your friends, and walk or roll with us at the MSU Out of the Darkness Campus Walk to show those who are struggling that they’re never alone. Learn More on UHW’s website.

CAPS Connect provides a place for students to talk about concerns during a brief, free, confidential, in-person conversations. Available to enrolled students, participants can have a mental health professional listen to their concerns and offer support and resources. See the schedule and location of CAPS Connect sessions on UHW’s website.

University Health and Wellbeing Retains Psychiatric Services

In fall 2025, UHW announced that as part of the 9% university budget reduction ask, psychiatric services would transition from Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) to MSU Health Care, Inc. In fall 2025, a pause was announced on the transition to ensure we could fully assess how to best meet the evolving needs of our students.

Health and well-being are foundational to student success for graduation and beyond and supporting student mental health remains a top priority for MSU.

Psychiatric services will remain with University Health and Wellbeing, located at Olin Health Center, and will realign with Campus Health Services, led by UHW Medical Director, Dr. Tim Spedoske. This bold, strategic and student focused move continues to prioritize the high-quality and coordinated mental health care students are accustomed to, while strengthening our clinical operations and leveraging our collective strengths.

Dr. Swapna Hingwe will serve as director for CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) and lead psychiatrist for Campus Health Services, continuing to lead student-facing counseling and psychiatric services.

Students will experience no disruption in care. All psychiatric services will continue as usual, with the same providers and the same high standard of support they are accustomed to, ensuring seamless, “no wrong door” access to the services they need.

Wondering what the difference between psychological services and psychiatry services is? Learn more at Physical Therapy and Psychiatric Services.

Support from the Office of the University Ombudsperson
As we come to the end of the semester, we understand that many students will have questions and concerns about their grades. The Office of the University Ombudsperson has resources on their self-help page to assist students in understanding how to think about and raise these types of issues (ombud.msu.edu/resources-self-help/for-undergraduate-students/grade-grievance). Students do have until the middle of the semester following a course to address their concerns.

The guidance above also references the Code of Teaching Responsibility which can be found here.

If your student would like to discuss their experience/concern with the Office of the University Ombudsperson, they may request an appointment by calling 517-353-8830, by emailing ombud@msu.edu or by visiting their website ombud.msu.edu.  To learn more about the Office of the University Ombudsperson, please watch a video about them here: ombud.msu.edu/about-office-video.
