Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps: A Decade of Impact |
|
|
Among the accomplishments that the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is celebrating in its 30th year is the creation of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps, which is marking its 10-year anniversary in 2025. What started as a pilot initiative with just five youth crews has now grown into a statewide program — so far engaging more than 1,500 young Pennsylvanians in hands-on conservation, workforce development, and community service.

Ground-level ozone is one of the nation’s most common air pollutants, and its concentrations typically peak during the hot, summer months.
Although ozone is most often generated by car exhaust and industrial air emissions, wildfire smoke can provide additional sources.
Residents and businesses can follow these tips to help reduce ozone air pollution:
|
- Drive less by carpooling or using public transportation.
- Combine errands to reduce vehicle trips.
- Limit engine idling.
- Be sure your tires are properly inflated to ensure the best fuel efficiency.
- Refuel cars and trucks after dusk.
- Be careful not to spill fuel and always tighten your gas cap securely.
- Conserve electricity by setting air conditioning to a higher temperature and turning off lights that are not in use.

A 20-person crew from the DCNR Bureau of Forestry recently returned from a two-week western fire assignment, assisting with wildfire suppression efforts on the South Rim Fire in Colorado and the Vees Fire in Wyoming.
As Pennsylvania’s lead wildfire response agency, DCNR deploys trained fire personnel through national cooperative agreements to support wildland firefighting efforts across the country. These assignments not only help other states in need, but also strengthen the skills and readiness of our own firefighters.
Thank you to this crew for their hard work, dedication, and professionalism in the face of challenging conditions.
