ChatEDU: Designing AI Tools Students Actually Use

Vasco Singh

Wednesday, February 26th 12-1 pm | 1400 18th Ave S A2009

ChatEDU was started as four students attempting to dream up the future of education. Through iterations, they built knowledge graphs of entire majors, a “search engine” for different learning paths, and even PDF-to-video lessons. Yet, time and time again, students would try these tools briefly before reverting to their usual study habits. Much like breaking other habits, students are rigid in how they study—introducing AI successfully isn’t about giving them a new tool, but embedding AI into the ways they already learn.

Vasco Singh, a ChatEDU founder, will walk through the evolution of ChatEDU, from V1 to V5, and the hard lessons learned before it finally gained traction with students. He’ll dive into the technical challenges of structuring AI for education, the trade-offs between different models in practice, and surprising insights from real student usage data. Whether you're interested in pedagogy, AI infrastructure, or the realities of getting AI into students’ hands, this session will explore what it really takes to build AI tools that students don’t just try once—but actually use. Pizza lunch will be provided.

Spark Research Grants 2025 Cycle

LIVE Spark Research Grants stimulate applied exploration of novel learning technology ideas and directions with strong potential for impact in formal, informal, or workplace learning contexts. We encourage proposals that include novel applications of emerging learning technologies and particularly those that explore the use of AI and analytics to improve learning and/or training.

Spark Research Grants provide financial support as well as generous in-kind resources. Proposal budgets will be carefully evaluated with priority given to those that are well-justified and clearly support project's goals.

Applications are due March 21, 2025

CFP Coming Soon: Advancing Innovative Math Solutions (AIMS) EduData Initiative

Over the past four years the Gates Foundation K-12 team has funded partnerships with education technology providers to help school districts and researchers understand student learning through everyday tools. This year, real-world math learning datasets generated through those tools are being made available as part of a forthcoming Request for Proposals, in partnership with Digital Promise. Preliminary information and an link to sign up for updates are available at the link below and the full call will be released March 1st, 2025. If you have specific questions related to a proposal idea that you would like to discuss with a program office, please reach out to live@vanderbilt.edu to get connected.
