This month we welcomed the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma’s elected leadership to campus for Celebrating Miami: Tribe and University Week. Chief Lankford, First Councilperson Hatley, and Second Councilperson Willard visited multiple classes including the Myaamia Heritage class, met with our campus partners, and attended athletic events while on campus.

Mihši neewe ‘a big thank you’ to Tribal leadership for joining us and to our partners in learning across campus for helping make this week possible. We’re looking forward to seeing them again in January when we travel to Miami, Oklahoma for the Miami Tribe’s annual Winter Gathering.

The Miami Tribe’s Indigenous Language Digital Archive (ILDA)—a key resource supporting the Myaamia dictionary—has reached 100,000 entries. This milestone reflects over three decades of collaborative research within the Myaamia community. The Miami Awakening: A Linguist’s Perspective, explores the work of Dr. David Costa, director of the Myaamia Center’s Office of Language Research, and his contributions to the Myaamia language revitalization effort.

Myaamia Heritage students had the opportunity to participate in a ribbonwork keychain-making workshop with Kristina Fox, Myaamia education coordinator. Kristina pre-cut the ribbons using a laser cutter at the Miami University Makerspace to simplify the process and focus the workshop time on layering and sewing techniques.
This was the final workshop of the fall semester, as our students begin shifting their focus toward final exams which will take place December 16-20, 2024 at Miami University.
