Message from Academic Affairs

Spring 2026 Kickoff

At the January 30th Academic Affairs Spring 2026 Kickoff, Provost Costino announced that the campus is not moving forward with the program discontinuation process for the six programs identified for possible discontinuation at this time and is instead set to engage in a process of Academic Portfolio Transformation. This process brings us together as a campus community to develop a mission-aligned academic portfolio that is attractive to first-time, transfer, returning, and graduate students and is responsive to the rapidly changing world they will enter. This transformation will be driven by faculty collaboration and result in curricula that build transferable skills, advance career readiness and social mobility, and incorporate interdisciplinary approaches to knowledge production and problem solving.

A survey went out on Friday, February 6, to help launch this work and identify areas of potential connection and partnership. The results will inform upcoming brown bag discussions, professional development opportunities, and additional spaces for dialogue and collaboration. If you have not yet completed the survey, we encourage you to do so by February 20th.

Join us for the first Academic Affairs Brown Bag for Spring 2026 on Wednesday, February 11th at noon (I&I 1500).

Statewide Academic Senate Updates

January 2026 ASCSU Plenary Update

At the January Plenary, system leaders shared updates on the formation of a new Division of Student Success and Strategic Enrollment Management aligned with CSU Forward, emphasizing coordinated implementation, improved access to data, and shared accountability for student success targets beginning with the fall 2027 cohort.

Enrollment planning continues to focus on retention and graduation alongside recruitment, including attention to second- and third-year persistence, policy reviews that may impede student progress, and efforts to streamline Cal State Apply in response to demographic shifts and adult learner needs.

Additional updates addressed ongoing reviews of PACE and fully online programs, consideration of credit for prior learning, cross-campus collaboration, and potential updates to policies governing consortium degrees and academic residency.

The plenary also included updates from the CSU Alumni Council on strengthening faculty engagement through alumni participation in academic programs, as well as a featured presentation by Dr. Nimisha Barton (CSULB) examining historical patterns of backlash in higher education and prompting discussion on faculty roles and shared governance.
