Greetings Colleagues, March 2024 Newsletter
This month, I’m thrilled to spotlight the Faculty Development branch of the Center for Faculty Excellence. The CFE provides a robust calendar of development offerings each semester in a variety of formats including virtual live and on-demand programs through Bridge, book and article clubs, communities of practice, and more. We’re building a repository of microlearning programs and have a work group focused on building resources for describing and developing teaching effectiveness. We award Faculty Development Grants annually and we honor up to two faculty each year with the Distinguished Educator in Teaching as Scholarship Award. Finally, we are available for consultation and networking on any issues related to teaching, learning and assessment.
We don’t accomplish our work on our own! Most of our development sessions are led by our talented cadre of Faculty Associates. Additionally, we collaborate with many other divisions and centers on campus to offer programming. This work is informed by a Faculty Development Advisory Group who meets with us quarterly.
Leading these efforts is Mary Emmer, MS, Faculty Development Specialist. Mary has been involved with faculty development efforts on campus for over 12 years, and brings a wealth of historical knowledge, experience, creativity, and stellar professionalism to the position. Accompanying Mary is Kym Bauer, Senior Program Coordinator, who not only supports faculty development initiatives, but also exudes a spirit of inclusivity and generosity to all who visit the CFE.
Lou Jensen, OTD, OTR/L.
Associate Vice Provost-Interim, Center for Faculty Excellence

| eLearning Spotlight: Laura Praus, M.Ed., Instructional Designer |
Like many instructional designers in the CFE, I began my career as a K-12 teacher, primarily teaching U.S. history, psychology, and American government. I joined the Creighton community in April 2019 as an instructional designer for the School of Medicine before transitioning to the CFE in October 2020 to support the College of Nursing and NOVICE

program. I sincerely enjoy collaborating with faculty and students and providing tools, strategies, and resources to promote engaging and effective teaching and learning practices. I am currently working toward certification as a practitioner of Team-Based Learning, a flipped classroom strategy which fosters knowledge acquisition, competency in application of knowledge, critical thinking, and team building. I am so grateful to be part of the Creighton family and, through working with the CFE, strive each day to serve the University’s commitment to the pursuit of academic excellence.
My husband and I are native Nebraskans and love cheering on the Huskers and Bluejays. We are proud parents to our amazing three-year-old daughter, Eleanor, and eagerly await the birth of our second child in April. In my spare time, I love to read, officiate high school and college volleyball matches, and travel as often as possible.

| Accessibility: It’s More Than Accommodations |
While instructors are familiar with providing accommodations for students with disabilities, accessibility is actually a more broad and important topic than what might be realized, and it impacts ALL students. Accessibility is integral when it comes to facilitating the power of online courses and the access to education they can provide. Instructure Instructional Designer Saša Stojić-Ito explains Universal Design for Learning as the roots for accessibility, the practical implications of accessibility-minded course design, and the seven pillars of accessibility in her article “Why Accessibility Matters in Course Design.” The article is full of helpful links and resources, and it also includes enlightening demonstrations of how course design details impact accessibility for students using screen reader technology.

Making Sure Grades are Hidden Until Posted in Blueline |
Instructors often encounter circumstances where they want to control student visibility of grades and feedback. Grade Posting Policies can be set for the entire gradebook, or for specific assignments. In addition, when using New Quizzes, student visibility of quiz scores is managed from the quiz settings menu. It is also important to note that students have the ability to leave a comment for instructors on an assignment even if grades are hidden and/or there is a manual grade posting policy. These comments appear in the comments section of Speedgrader, however any instructor comments that have not yet been posted are not visible to students until grades are posted.
