CBS Spotlights Downtown Skokie’s ‘Small Business Renaissance’ |
CBS Chicago recently highlighted Downtown Skokie’s thriving small business scene.
The scoop: More than a dozen new businesses have opened in Downtown Skokie in the last year, with more exciting openings to come. We continue to partner with Skokie businesses to solve problems, coordinate events, and strategically plan for the future.

Skokie Receives High Marks In 2024 Community Survey
|
Skokie residents are highly satisfied with the quality of services provided by the Village and overall quality of life in Skokie, according to the results of a statistically valid, scientific survey conducted every three years.
The highlights: Skokie exceeded national benchmarks in 51 out of 123 Community Survey questions, and did not fall below national benchmarks for any question.

90 percent rated Skokie as excellent/good for attracting people from diverse backgrounds (Skokie ranked 2nd out of 288 communities)
- 89 percent rated overall customer service by Village employees as excellent/good (Skokie ranked 24th out of 359 communities)
- 87 percent rated opportunities for culture, education and the arts as excellent/good (Skokie ranked 16th out of 316 communities)

In addition, 92 percent of households rated Skokie as an excellent or good place to live, and 83 percent ranked the quality of Village services as excellent/good, placing Skokie Village services in the top 10 percent of communities overall.
Top issues: According to the survey, the top three issues residents would like the Village to focus on in the next two years include:

- Mobility (street repair, parking and lighting)
- Attracting more businesses to Downtown Skokie

Taking Shape: Skokie’s ‘Swift District’
|
The “Swift District,” a transit-oriented corridor adjacent to the CTA Yellow Line Oakton-Skokie station along Skokie Boulevard, is taking shape.
The vision: The Swift District leverages the proximity to the CTA, Downtown Skokie and the Illinois Science + Technology Park (ISTP). Several projects in the corridor are in various stages of planning and development.

8201 Skokie Blvd.: On Monday, the Village Board authorized execution of a redevelopment agreement for the future construction of a five-story, mixed-use building with 66 residential units. The developer will provide six housing units as affordable for individuals at 60 percent of Area Median Income (AMI).

8143 Skokie Blvd.: The Village has issued a Request for Qualifications (PDF) for developers and is seeking to construct a multi-family, mixed-use development on the Village-owned property north of Ignite Gaming.

8101 Skokie Blvd.: The property is in the plan review process for a proposed five-story, mixed-use building containing 20 residential units.
- 8047 Skokie Blvd.: In 2023, the Village Board approved a five-story, mixed-use building containing 56 residential units on the vacant property, the site of a former bank. Work is expected to begin this winter.

Holiday Service Schedules
|
There will be no changes to refuse or recycling collection for the Christmas or New Year’s holidays. All collections will occur as normal both weeks.
Why no changes? Both holidays fall on a Wednesday this year. Only yard waste is collected on Wednesdays, and yard waste collections have concluded for the season.

Village Hall will be closed on December 25 and January 1. Village Hall will be open for normal hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on December 24 and 31.

Ride the CTA Holiday Train On the Yellow Line, December 23
|
The CTA holiday train will be on the Yellow Line on Monday, December 23. The holiday train will be in service from 3:08 p.m. until 7:16 p.m.

The Village’s Health and Human Services Department, in collaboration with the Skokie Health Equity Network, urges all pregnant residents to begin prenatal care early to ensure the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby.
