We’ll dive into KU’s Common Book The Anthropocene Reviewed and also make space for whatever else you’re reading. Expect relaxed conversations, fun book-related crafts and games, and a welcoming space for anyone who enjoys stories in any form.
Green Building Initiative

Green Building Initiative will be visiting the School of Architecture and Design to give a presentation on Green Globes for Emerging Professionals (GGEP). This program is designed for college level students pursuing a design/engineering and/or sustainability focused degree, although any discipline may pursue GGEP certification. GGEP candidates may also be architects, engineers or sustainability professionals early in their career, who do not meet the 5 years experience required to become a Green Globes Professional (GGP). The GGEP training program includes topics such as the importance of green building, an introduction to GBI and the Green Globes certification system, and sustainability concepts. This introductory certification is an excellent way for participants to become familiar with the background, topics, terminology, and processes related to Green Globes prior to becoming active in the green building community and earning the Green Globes Professional credential.

You are invited to join for Trunk or Treat, the CCO's annual trick-or-treating event. Sign up with a student group to host decorated trunks for Lawrence community members to safely trick-or-treat at.
Be prepared to pick a fun theme, dress up in Halloween costumes, and decorate the trunk of your car to match the spirit of your theme!
Each car should have a max of 4 volunteers. Be prepared to arrive at 4:30 PM.

Taking inspiration from both this year’s Common Work of Art, “Haunted by the Ghosts of Our Own Making” by Hollis Sigler, and KU’s Common Book The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, explore the ways in which your own personal “ghosts” (anxiety, fear, worry) haunt you. Consider how art can help you better understand these ghosts or see them in a different context, and craft your own message to reframe your haunted story.

BWBR is offering two scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each, that are open to students who have completed at least 1 full year of study in an architecture, interior design or graphic design program.
• Submitted project should address design that advances equity in the built environment.
• Two winners will be selected, each receiving a $2,500 award.

Mentored Scholars Program in School of Architecture & Design
Applications are now open for current eligible First Year students in the School of Architecture and Design to apply for the Mentored Scholars Program (MSP) in the School of Architecture & Design. This MSP scholarship serves first-generation college students by providing faculty mentorship and access to educational funding during their undergraduate journey. Students accepted to the MSP program will receive $1000 each academic year, or $500 per semester. The scholarship amount may be increased when the scholarship funds generate enough reserves.

SOM Foundation 2025 Robert L. Wesley Award
The Robert L. Wesley Award supports BIPOC undergraduate students enrolled in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, or engineering programs in the United States. This year, three students will receive a $10,000 award in addition to a yearlong mentorship program that connects the students with leading BIPOC practitioners and educators.

Hart Howerton Travel Fellowship
Named by Architectural Digest as “one of the Fellowship programs paving the way for the future of architecture,” the Hart Howerton Fellowship is open to undergraduate and graduate students in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design who will be entering their final year of study. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Fellowship, celebrating two decades of supporting future design leaders. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue independent travel and research on a topic of their choice alongside a summer internship in Hart Howerton’s New York or San Francisco office.

As Grass Grows: Ten Years at Prairieside Outpost is a group exhibition commemorating the first ten years of the Artist-in-Residence program at Prairieside Outpost in Matfield Green, Kansas. The exhibition features 28 visual artists and writers from across North America, including Photography professor Lilly McElroy. Each artist featured has worked on their creative endeavors in the remote and head-clearing expanse that is the Kansas Flint Hills.

Sponsored by SOM’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) - Arquitectos, Asian Alliance, NOMA, Pride, and Women’s Initiative groups, this week-long program offers an immersive professional experience, mentorship, and guidance to students of all backgrounds. The program is open to applicants who are planning careers in architecture, engineering, urban planning, graphic design, or interior design, and who share a passion for advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in the AEC industry.
As a current undergraduate or graduate student in architecture, engineering, or a related design field, you will have the opportunity to gain a well-rounded perspective on SOM and the day-to-day experience in our studios. Through a series of lectures and events, representatives from multiple disciplines will share their experiences and expertise.
This program will take place January 12 - January 16, 2026, and be held in-person in our studios.
