Top Five Things to Know

From the Office of Provost Peggy Agouris

OFFICE OF THE PROVOST
WEEKLY MESSAGE ARCHIVE

Dear colleagues,

Artificial Intelligence is quickly becoming a frequent topic in our daily interactions and activities in teaching, learning, research, and beyond. Please read William & Mary’s updated guidance related to AI and the Honor Code and note the select points of guidance on student use of artificial intelligence in the classroom.

Here are the top “5 Things to Know” this week:

  1. The Supreme Court Preview, hosted by William & Mary Law’s Institute of Bill of Rights Law, is an annual conference that convenes judges, scholars, advocates, and journalists to discuss the Supreme Court’s upcoming term. The preview will begin with a moot court of a pending Supreme Court case on Friday, September 19, and continue with additional thematic panels through Saturday afternoon. W&M faculty, staff, and students are welcome to register for free.

  2. William & Mary has officially launched a new minor in AI that gives students the tools to apply AI in their respective fields. In addition, W&M recently introduced the Griffin Guide to AI, an optional AI literacy short course in Blackboard. While designed for students who are curious about AI but have limited experience, the course is also available for faculty interested in integrating AI into their teaching. Thanks to support from W&M Libraries, those who complete the course requirements will earn a Credly badge to share on LinkedIn.

  3. The Virginia Coastal Resilience Collaborative at W&M will host its inaugural fall conference on October 3 at the Williamsburg Lodge. Topics will broadly cover areas of financing in the resilience space, including insurance and mortgage banking in the face of growing risk, and funding sources and structures for local government financing. Registration closes on September 18.

  4. The Charles Center for Academic Excellence is celebrating the summer research of over 200 students in its Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium, from 10:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. this Friday, September 19, in Swem Library. Drop by for inspiration, conversation, and refreshments.

  5. This week’s shoutout goes to the entire team behind the successful 2025 W&M Women’s Weekend. The event was an incredible opportunity for every member of the W&M community to come together for moments of connection and celebration. I was honored to moderate the Deans’ Panel and hear our deans share their perspectives on the vision and direction of their schools. I continue to receive wonderful feedback about the many engaging sessions and memorable moments throughout the weekend. Thank you to everyone who made this celebration such a success!
