Dear Eagle Nation,
On this Veterans Day, I join our nation in honoring the brave men and women who have helped advance America to become the greatest country on earth. On this day, we salute the generation who freed a continent from fascism. We pay tribute to those who defended the people of South Korea; soldiers who fought through the brutal battle of Vietnam; stood up to a tyrant in Desert Storm; stopped ethnic cleansing in the Baltics; and our 911 generation, who fought in Iran and Afghanistan.

When I reflect on the most pivotal moments of my life, my time in the U.S. Army will always be a profound period that transformed me forever. At age 17, I was a G.I. I landed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina for basic training. One week into basic training, I was thrusted into the role of platoon leader, and therefore responsible for 300 men (all which were older than me).
Drill Sergeants Santiago, McDowell, and Jackson pushed me, and challenged me in ways I could never have imagined. My four years with the U.S. Army’s 18th Airborne Corps, Air Defense Artillery (ADA) unit, shaped my life for the better.  The values learned – discipline, integrity, resilience, loyalty, and the power to collaborate — I carry with me every day at Coppin.

I am proud to be a part of a special fraternity. Currently, I am one of less than a dozen sitting college or university presidents, in our nation, who have served in the military. Since arriving at Coppin, I have focused on growing our ROTC program, which now enrolls the highest number of cadets in our university's history.

A key initiative has been the opening of The Military-Connected Student Support Services Office in the Eagle Achievement Center. This office supports military members and their families by providing resources, programs, and counseling services tailored to their needs. We are building a supportive community for our cadets and veterans to help them succeed as leaders and engaged citizens who represent Coppin’s values.

One tradition that fills me with pride is the commissioning of ROTC cadets during our commencement ceremony. I created this tradition, to honor these young leaders. To expose the campus, families and visitors bear witness to the powerful moment where cadets take their oath to selflessly defend our freedoms. It reflects Coppin’s mission to develop leaders who serve a purpose greater than themselves.

On Thursday, November 7, three Coppin State cadets—Trina Holt, Amauche Nwosu, and Marita Asamoah—were awarded the LT. Richard Collins Scholarship of $10,000 each. Antwoine Robinson Jr. received the Bear Battalion coin for volunteering as a platoon leader during a training exercise. There is no question that Coppin State is committed to supporting those who have served and will continue to serve our nation. For us, it starts from the top!

To all veterans, thank you for your service, sacrifice, and strength. Today, as we honor you, let us renew our commitment to building communities rooted in service and guided by integrity. Together, we can inspire future generations to carry forward the spirit of leadership and dedication that defines our nation.

The September 2024 issue of The ABNFF Journal showcased Coppin State University's commitment to advancing nursing education and healthcare. Dr. Tilghman served as Guest Editor for this refereed issue, which featured contributions from esteemed faculty, adjunct faculty, a BSN to DNP student from the Class of 2024, and a current BSN to DNP student from the Class of 2025. The edition covered diverse topics impacting nursing education, with a central focus on "Transformative Practices in Education, Research, and Curriculum Trends."

Highlighting the work of the College of Health Professions School of Allied Health and the Helene Fuld School of Nursing—the leading HBCU nursing program in Maryland—the issue emphasized Coppin’s readiness to address the rising demand for skilled health education and information professionals. The Helene Fuld School of Nursing continues to excel, producing diverse graduates with baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees.
The scholarship of Coppin faculty, students, and alumni were included in this issue, demonstrating exemplary practices that advance healthcare delivery, address health disparities, and foster lifelong learning within our university community and beyond.
