Inside Chelsea Square | Weekly Update from Vanderbilt |
|
| |
|
Hi neighbor,
We hope you are well! This update outlines planned construction activity on Vanderbilt’s Chelsea campus from Monday, April 27, through Sunday, May 3.
|
At a glance: This week’s key community impacts |
- Work is expected to conclude by 6:30 p.m. daily.
- Parking on 21st Street and 20th Street remains impacted. The sidewalk on 21st Street, near Lorillard, will be temporarily impacted by drainage system updates.
- The south side of 21st Street is closed for utility work. The north side of the street remains open for traffic.
-
The 21st Street campus entrance remains closed; access campus via the 20th Street entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, NY 10011).
- The Chapel is temporarily closed to the public as a safety precaution.
-
The lawn areas of campus remain impacted by the stormwater infrastructure upgrade. Activity moves to the west lawn with new fencing installed; noise with equipment use and spatial impact will mirror prior weeks. The temporary walkway remains.
-
A steady grinding noise at moderate levels is expected throughout the week due to brickwork restoration across campus; a steady hammering noise is also expected with Seabury roof work; medium noise is expected to accompany concrete work on the west side of campus.
-
Interior renovation work continues this week, with moderate to medium noise from Keller and Sherred. The community may notice increased traffic in the area and the movement of materials for disposal.

|
As progress continues across campus, we’re excited to share a small but meaningful addition taking shape: the new ADA ramp by Sherred.
It may not be the flashiest part of the project, and it might not even look like much right now, but this ramp is an important step toward making our space more accessible and welcoming.
We’re looking forward to the day when we can show a side-by-side view when the ramp is complete. For now, take a glimpse at where the work stands today!

More details: Expected construction activity & impacts |
-
The community can expect ongoing worker presence from Monday through Saturday of this week. Saturday will remain up to an eight-hour workday; days may extend by up to two additional hours Monday through Friday.
- Deliveries/trucks are expected throughout this week; impacts will be similar to those in prior weeks. When necessary, flaggers will direct traffic.
-
Parking on 20th and 21st remains impacted. The south lane on 21st Street is closed; the north lane remains open for traffic. The 21st Street sidewalk, closest to 10th Ave., will be impacted this week.
- Optical monitoring is expected twice a week. Workers will be outside and around campus surveying; no cameras or photos will be used.
-
Temporary staging of construction materials, equipment and storage sheds remains on the lawn areas of The Close and along West 21st Street.
- The community may notice intermittent changes in scaffolding accompanied by a moderate hammering noise to accommodate ongoing work. Fear not, any scaffolding moved will be returned good as new!
|
Main drainage system upgrades are in progress with impacts on the 21st Street sidewalk and parking access near Lorillard.
|
- Noise impact: Moderate noise levels.
- Spatial impact: Sidewalk access on 21st Street near Lorillard will be impacted this week. Likewise, parking along this section of 21st Street may be impacted as crews install new piping.
|
South lane of 21st Street is closed; north lane remains open.
|
-
Noise impact: Steady moderate noise levels with equipment use.
- Spatial impact: The south lane of 21st Street will remain closed for several weeks.
-
FYI: The north lane of 21st Street will remain open to maintain traffic flow in the area. No parking will be available on either side of the street for the duration of the project. This allows the contractor to work on utilities in the area to make a connection from the street to the buildings.
|
Renovation of the 21st Street campus entrance continues; the 21st Street entrance is closed. Use the 20th Street entrance to access campus.
|
- Noise impact: Moderate noise levels, with work expected to be louder during periodic breaking of concrete.
- Spatial impact: The 21st Street campus entrance is closed for the foreseeable future. Community members will use the 20th Street entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, NY 10011) to access campus. Equipment will be stored in the area.
|
Stormwater infrastructure upgrade begins on the west lawn with fencing installation along the curbline and ongoing noise from excavation equipment.
|
-
Noise impact: Steady, moderate noise levels with equipment use. Noise comparable to weeks.
- Spatial impact: Fencing is installed along the curbline to allow for this work to take place. The community will notice excavation with some dirt moving around. In the meantime, a temporary walkway is in place, with some tweaks to accommodate a recent campus event. We will get things looking good as new as soon as we can!
- FYI: Like previously weeks on the east lawn, it’s now the west lawn’s turn for stormwater infrastructure upgrades! Stormwater tanks are important for the long-term care of the campus. This tank catches runoff water from the buildings, reduces erosion and prevents pollution from entering the waterways.
|
Brickwork restoration remains active across campus.
|
-
Noise impact: Steady grinding expected at a moderate noise level.
- FYI: This maintenance work is part of an ongoing effort to preserve not only the appearance of our historic campus but also support its long-term structural integrity.
|
Seabury roof work continues with steady hammering.
|
-
Noise impact: Steady hammering expected at a moderate noise level.
- FYI: This maintenance work is part of an ongoing effort to preserve not only the appearance of our historic campus but also support its long-term structural integrity.
|
Interior renovation continues across campus this week.
|
-
Noise impact: Moderate noise levels.
- Spatial impact: Parking on 20th Street will remain impacted in the coming months. The community may notice some temporary scaffolding changes outside of Sherred, Seabury and Dodge.
|
Interior renovation continues this week; work in Seabury and Keller is expected to be most noticeable to the community.
|
- Noise impact: Moderate to medium noise levels.
- Spatial impact: Removed materials may be loaded for disposal with minimal additional disturbance to the community.
-
FYI: Aesthetically, the community may notice temporary windows with plywood additions. Replacement windows will be installed later in the renovation process. Work in Sherred supports framing and drywall preparation; activity in Keller is related to framing, electrical and plumbing.
|
|
|
|
There are four events scheduled on campus this week. Three are private (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon), with a public event on Thursday evening. The community can expect more foot traffic than during typical day-to-day operations, with the most noticeable impact on Thursday evening, especially around Hoffman Hall.
The community may also notice some changes, including modifications to the bluestone walkway, to accommodate events on campus. Please note that these modifications, especially the bluestone walkway, are not in final form.
|
Thank you to everyone who attended Cocktails & Construction last week. It was wonderful seeing so many of you on campus and connecting in person.
